Biography

The Kinks were formed by brothers Ray and Dave Davies in their hometown of Muswell Hill, North London. The brothers began playing skiffle and rock and roll, recruiting Peter Quaife to play bass with them. By the summer of 1963, as The Ravens, they'd recruited drummer Mickey Willet. Eventually their demo tape reached American record producer Shel Talmy who helped the band land a contract with Pye… Read more in Amazon's The Kinks Store

Rock's the Word 29 Jan 2010
Format:Audio CD
Part of the Kinks' great rock cycle - tremendous collection of songs along with Sleepwalker, Misfits, State of Confusion, Low Budget and Give the People What They Want. For me, this cycle is the very best songs Ray Davies ever wrote - they are largely unknown, forgotten or ignored. What a shame - start discovering them now!

A great album 23 Sep 2003
Format:Audio CD
This album is like the decade it came from. Once again The Kinks predict what is coming for the next decade. Dave Davis songs are truly inspired as are Rays. I grew up on this album and I rate every song on it. Daves guitar playing skills have vastly improved and Rays songwriting has also adapted to the decade. I read a review saying it was 80's metal but it isn't that is just daft it has an element of punk in it but not metal

I would recommend this album to every Kinks fan. I would also say it is a must to the new fans

By D. J. H. Thorn TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
The Kinks enjoyed a resurgence in the USA between 1977 and 1984 when they shook off the old thematic conceits and got back to combining straight rock music with Ray Davies's insightful lyrics. 'Sleepwalker', one of the stronger efforts, started it off and 'Word of Mouth', the weakest, ended it. There is, to use a cliche, a lot of perspiration here and not much inspiration. 'Do It Again' is the outstanding track with, perversely, slower songs such as 'Living On A Thin Line' among the best of the rest.

For once, RD's muse let him down, while the rockers are let down particularly by the drumming. Mick Avory - assuming he was still with the band, as I seem to recall he was sacked around this time - does little more than mark time on most of these songs. The album's only saving grace is its energy level and the first track.
