Format:Audio CD
A must for anyone who is capable of thought, this collection will stun you on its first hearing (this is normal, it will always happen), the lyrics/poems having a raw power that will make you wonder why you have never been able to write as he can. Scared of no-one, there can be no doubt JCC is fearless in what he does write, but that's not to be thought of as arrogance in any way at all, no, it's observation of the highest order - he has something to say for sure. As for others here commenting on the music accompanying the words, I can only say that the strident/near discordant style actually enhances the tracks for me, in that respect Beasley Street is a tour de force - it's not music plus lyrics, it's music times lyrics. A great collection from an unsung hero.

It is true that the music gets in the way sometimes - "Evidently Chicken Town" is a case in point - but his poetry is so much better than most lyrics that I am ready and willing to put up with the background noise. And some of the music works just fine.
It may all be a freak of chance - a Mancunian scally wag getting on stage at a time when anyone could, but he is great - he doesn't hold back, so don't moan about his Dylan '66 hair, just open your ears.
Mmmmmm 'Lyrics', 'Poetry' or 'Rap'? It doesn't matter he knocks you out with the bitter & twisted self-deprecating witty truth from the backstreets of a town near you.

If you've ever wondered what all the old 40-somethings are talking about when this guy's name crops up, buy this album and clue yourself in - you'll love yourself for doing it.
His poems and delivery are unique.
Fans will argue endlessly about what constitutes a Johhny Clarke 'best of' but this offering will bring joy and laughter to anyone who has a funny-bone in their body regardless.

Its true, John Cooper Clarke made poetry/music, thats how it went. He read his poetry along to music. This is the only way you will find him on cd. Read more
