Never one to shirk the issue or avoid controversy, Vin has put together an album which has it's fair share of thought provoking subjects. Some have been in his live set for a while, but not recorded before, and all have that distinct feel of a Vin Garbuttsong. A truly thought provoking album from one of the best around…highly recommended.

Format:Audio CD
I was given this album as a gift after seeing Vin perform live on 14 June in Northumbria and to listen to it brings back such strong memories of this unassuming man with the spellbinding voice and a gift for storytelling.
This album is a collection of both Vin's own material and those of other folk singers and the result is a mixture of the sublime and the stirring. "Forty Thieves" will get right inside you and you'll find you can't stop yourself singing along and the dancing melodies of the whistle on Wilfy Manion can't fail to set toes tapping. Contrast this with the haunting notes of "City of Angels" & "Troubles of Erin" - both of which I can't listen too without tears in my eyes and you have an album worth its weight in gold. Every song has a history and a meaning, and while the sound is different to Vin's excellent live act - a backing band as opposed to simply himself and his guitar, the voice is unmistakeable.
A great album from a vastly underrated singer/songwriter, anyone who just writes this off as "folky rubbish" needs to take a good step back and look again - if you get a chance to see the man live go for it. Buy, listen n enjoy ... I dare you!

I have been watching Vin at regular intervals for over thirty years now, and many people have been lucky enough to be touched by this remarkable man for much longer. Whether it be listening to him live, catching him on the radio or putting him up for the night after a local gig, you can't help but be moved by this man.
His songs are powerful and yes, sometimes pushing a view that you may or not agree with, but what you can't take away from him is how he captures his thoughts in song. This album is vintage Garbutt. if you know him, you will like this. if you don't then it is an introduction to a style that is unique yet recognisable as part of the English folk genre. Whatever, you will be carried away to a place you will like.
I am knocking off a star for personal taste reasons rather than quality of the album. Vin has more than just his guitar and tin whistle here, so the raw Vin is clouded by (wonderful) accompaniments that are not there when you see him live. For me, I like just Vin and his guitar, laced with frequent jigs & reels when he pulls the whistle out.
