Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Compiled by Wordplay, the UK label that brought Mark B & Blade to the mainstream, Word Lab 2 is a phenomenal testament to the rude health of UK hip-hop in the year 2001. Predictably it's Mark B & Blade who provide the most immediate rabble-rouser with the striding disaster movie horns and UK flag-waving rhymes of "Ya Don't See The Signs". But the new rap talent, who account for the majority of tracks, aren't far behind, suggesting a mammoth step towards the commercial viability British rap has long claimed it deserves. Although still arguing--in true UK tradition--for greater respect, the likes of Taskforce's "I'm talking metaphors like Yoda on LSD" state their case with a little more style, poise and humour than previous generations. Similarly, Word Lab 2 eskews UK hip-hop's obsession with oh-so-serious dank inner-city rhythm tracks, rolling to an easier and more imaginative set of beats. Highlighted by Braintax & Mystro's head-nodding "Free The Walls", the sexy blaxpolitation funk of Champions Of Nature's "Salsa Smurf" and the jazzy breaks of Styly Cee's "All Stylz Anthem", this collection is as much about low-slung party tunes as lyrical dexterity and finesse. None of which means there's any less attitude, it's just a whole lot more entertaining. --Dan Gennoe

After being a tru hip hop fan for many years i started researching and getting into UK hip hop, and found out there is a mass surge of talent in our own country. many people who claim 2 like hip hop dont like british hip hop coz our accents got a diiferent twang to american emcees but when u listen to tha lyricks and production on these tracks u will see that its definitley not inferior to US rap. this album is full with loadz of great tracks, like free the walls by braintax and mystro.all stylz anthem by stylee cee and its us were back by taskforce there is also a track from dj plus one and killa kela (UK human beat box) and estelle UKs own female emcee some of the other tracks by people like skillion grimes, ricochet (universal soldiers) and karl hinds have a very ragga feel to them but are also hot tracks, so buy this album if u r patriotic and listen with an open mind.

Best of British 8 Sep 2001

If you are wanting to get into british hip-hop then this is the way. Tracks such as salsa smurf by champions of nature are reflection of true british capability with imaginative lyrics over funk beats. For those of you have turned their backs on Mark B and blade after their unexpected release of ya dont see the signs remix feat.grant nicholas which was in a word 'shite', this phi-life cypher remix gives a refreshing memory of why the track was amiable in the first place. Unlike WL1 this is more of a melow.less party like album yet still in itself a truly masterful compilation.
