There has been little coverage of VBA for Word. This is one of the very few books that get into working with newer versions of Word. It is written by an experienced author who is very good at explaining concepts and starting with simple things. Not that he can make the Word object model any less convoluted than it is.
The examples and tasks in the book build carefully on one another, and you could come a long way toward understanding how macros work with Word. It does stick to the easy end of things, but provides a good foundation for a non-programmer who wants to go further than just recording macros. Recording macros doesn't work as well in 2007 and 2010 as it did in 2003 and earlier anyway.
The other book to investigate is Jack Lyons' Macro Cookbook for Microsoft Word. He takes a different approach. I recommend pairing the two books. After you master both, you'll be ready to investigate the large amount of sample macros and other code available on the web.
