Product Description

Book Description
Word 2000 is an important part of the Office 2000 program suite, and will be available in the Premium, Professional, Standard and Small Business editions of Office 2000. Word has traditionally been the Office suite wordprocessor program par excellence. It still remains that way, but with Office 2000 there is a strong emphasis on between-application automation, ease of use, and the smart new bells and whistles that 2000 brings. Using VBA (Visual Basic for Applications), the user can program his or her own programs in what is essentially a subset of the Visual Basic programming languages. This is neat because it allows you to automate a lot of the word processing tasks performed daily, one press of a button can link Excel spreadsheets into Word documents, prepare chapters for layout at Wrox Press, etc. This book presents a full reference to the Word object model, which is essentially the object oriented system of organizing the functional capacities that make up the Word program. There will be a short introduction to VBA itself, and the rest of the book will document aspects of programming Word through that object model. This book will be in three broad sections: the first part introduces Word and VBA; the second offers interesting, thematic discussions of some of the capacities available to Word VBA. The third and final part offers a full reference to the object model of Word.

From the Publisher
This book is for the Word user who is ready to begin saving time by exploring the Word object model to automate commonly repeated tasks. Some knowledge of Word macros would be useful.

1.0 out of 5 stars The least useful book I ever bought, 11 April 2002
By A Customer
As an experienced VBA developer with Excel, and Access I found this book a great disappointment.
I have recently built an application to provide UKGAAP accounts for a large company using Access to store and modify data extracted from legacy systems. All updates to the finished document for publication are controlled fully by VBA from within Word.
I dipped in to this book for techniques examples or inspiration which I was unable to find.
Essential requirements like preserving bookmarks on update and aligning numbers in tables (where negative values have brackets) being a result of research elsewhere.
I have an excellent Wrox book on programming Access 2000, sadly this one does not match up

1.0 out of 5 stars Not exactly practical..., 29 Mar 2001

(REAL NAME)
Firstly, this book is NOT as good for users of Office 97 as Office 2000 - there are changes in the language that are not flagged up by this book. Secondly the documenting of the Object model is certainly thorough, but so badly designed and implemented in the text that it requires several heavy objects and lots of patience to follow it. In fact it is done better in the Word help files, leaving you to wonder what exactly you're spending your money on. Thirdly VBA is not a subset of VB - it is VB with the Office object hierachy available to it, a strange way of defining a subset. Fourthly, 'neat' programming Office may be, but this book is not going to give you any concrete examples that you might use in real life. One for tinkerers rather than professionals.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book on the Word Document object model, 27 Sep 1999
By marcus.cripps@i2.com (Nottingham, England) - See all my reviews
After searching for sometime to find a book on customizing Word 97 using VBA I came across this gem. Although described as a book on Word 2000, this book is just as good for Word 97 and provides an excellent description of the document object model. For those unfamiliar with VBA, it gives a good introduction on the basics although a book like VB and VBA in a nutshell may be required if you want a reference on the standard VB/VBA functions. Well-written, with useful examples and descriptions of advanced Word functionality, this is a definite 5-star book.
