Review

This long-overdue book was well worth the wait. Highly recommended. -- M. J. Stone Choice 20001201

Product Description

Woody cut stems are the focus of a burgeoning, worldwide business. Until now, professional growers have lacked a resource that addresses how to choose, cultivate, and handle these popular plants. "Woody Cut Stems for Growers and Florists" fills this gap. Includes detailed information on 100 woody genera used for cut stems, extensive production guidelines, and explanations of techniques such as pruning, coppicing, and forcing. Rounding out the book are useful charts and tables that list species according to characteristics such as color, season of bloom, use, and fragrance. Growers who have been eager to add woody cut stems to the products they produce will find all the information they need to expand their business in an exciting and profitable new direction.

I ordered this book a few months ago and it has helped me greatly in deciding which woodies to plant for my commercial cut flower enterprise. For every species is listed: why would you grow it, why would you NOT grow it, and further info about spacing, varieties, yields, climatic conditions etc. Very useful.

Far too basic. 31 Oct 2011

Format:Hardcover
This is a nicely-presented, but overly concise easy read, which, in my opinion, would be suitable for casual readers and inexperienced gardeners, but not for commercial purposes. There is too much emphasis on description, which growers and florists alike surely know about and too little information about production and handling. It is far too basic, but might be suitable for a beginner in the field or someone looking to cut flowers and stems in their own garden.

This bood has been very useful for me. I am a student in forestry. I am also a florist and currently I am writing an essay on the possibilities on harvesting and using woody cut stems from our forests in Iceland in the florist industry.
