5.0 out of 5 stars Great new concept for self teach manuals of this type, 1 April 1999
By A Customer
I saw the draft manuscript for this, Phil's first book, at a recent seminar and was immediately impressed. What Phil has done is to guide the 'wanna be' woodturner through a series of projects starting with simple spindle work and progressing to his latest master class standard in hollow forms that has made him world famous. It follows that it is not just aimed at beginners but can be enjoyed by any one whatever their skill level.

The clever trick is the split presentation - Two Books in One.

The top half of the book is the background text and the staged projects. The bottom half describes the individual techniques which need to be mastered. As one progresses through the projects the corresponding skills are keyed by number and can be referred to independently by virtue of the books split (common) binding. This avoids loosing your place in the main text and is a clever idea - but then anyone who has seen Phil demonstrate will know he is not short of these.

Phil pays tribute to the major influences in his development as a woodturner and explains what it is about shape and form that now fascinate him over and above the natural qualities of the woods he works with.

This book is well in touch with the novice as well as deserving the critical attention of his peers. I found it almost autobiographical in the way he describes his own development. More experienced turners will find empathy with some of his anecdotes. All artists in wood turning should aquaint themselves with it's content.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for every wood turner, beginer or expert, 26 Jan 2000
By A Customer
A real departure from the average woodturning book. By using an innovative "two books in one " concept the author is able to simultaneously outline rewarding projects with relevant techniques. The author covers every aspect of wood turning, from sourcing and preparing blanks through spindle and faceplate techniques and projects, finishing in a gallery of superb examples of the craft. The projects cover items of practical use through the spectrum to more artistic turnings. The photography is excellent giving clear step by step details of each process. The book itself has most of the pages split in two horizontally but kept securely in place with a spiral binding system. With every project in the top half of the book there is a reference to the techniques used which can be read in the bottom half of the book. Hence two books in one. Wood turning is very difficult to convey in a book form, in my opinion Mr. Irons gets as close to the perfect book as is possible. I have never recomended a book before, but I would suggest that this would be a "must buy" for any woodturner novice or expert. I look foward to the next "two books in one" from this author.
