Being a retailer of woodturning machinery ,tools and books means i get to look at all the new publications that come out. Robert chapmans book ranks amongst the best books for turners who are compitent but want to take there hobby to the next level. The work illustrated is of an excellant quality and the author removes some of the mystery of his work. Anyone who reads this book will want to go straight out into their workshop and have a go, an absolute must for all woodturners.

A lovely book which is interesting to read and gives good explanations, good photographs and good instruction and tips. And full of ideas for your future projects. The beginner may find some items very hard to produce so I would suggest it it for the more experienced wood turner.

I have been woodturning for a couple of years and have several books on the subject. I wouldn't say this is a stand alone beginners book you would probably need another one or two to supplement it, but that may just be me. I like several sources on the same suject to pick out bits from each. It's a personal thing. That said I like this book very much. It is written in good plain english, the pictures are good and clear, showing where the chisel/gouge is pointing and where the flute is etc. It has good tips and clear instruction. It has a nice bit about harvesting your own wood and what to look for in the log, what the grain will look like. I would definitely recommend this book.

I write this with less than a year wood turning experience but a lifetime's experience in working with wood so please accept this review with this in mind.
This book provides a very comprehensive coverage of a great many (most) aspects of the skills required. Excellent examples are worked through from block to completion. Well written and generous in divulging techniques that would otherwise take a long time to acquire.
Would recommend this for the wood turner who has aspirations to improve their skills and perception of design.

The book starts with choice of tools and a description of the wood and how to cut it prior to turning it. In following chapters you are taken through simple project that later in the book become quite demanding on your turning ability. There are some excelllent illustrations and good descriptions throughout. The book is a pleasure to read and very well illustrated.
