About the Author

After an initial career in electronic engineering, Derek taught yoga, became a full-time teacher in mathematics and computing at a local secondary school, and then had a long career in adult education, where he met with professional artists and craftspeople. This fired his interest in craft and led to him taking up woodturning in the mid-90s, and this has now become his first love. In the previous year Derek has written various articles for magazines, including 10 for GMCs Woodturning magazine. He lives in Tonbridge, Kent.

one of the best books on turning I have ever read, so many ideas, so many ways to make the ideas ,tools and jigs how to use them ,how to make them . It encourages you to think outside the box ,why should turning just be bowls, spindles or hollow forms. Read this book and let your imagination free

I gained a great deal from reading this book. It is an excellent, concise, introduction to the subject. The author is clearly passing on years of experience.

I purchased this for my husband who is a wood turning hobbyist and spends most all of his free time making bowls, lamps, candle sticks, and general household decor. I was hoping this book would bring him inspiration about different styles of turned wood objects. It is very detailed and is perhaps a bit more for people who are creating objects more as art rather than semi useful objects. The bowls in the book are beautiful, but do not strike me as something I should put anything in. It starts about shapes, colours, balance, lines and quickly moves on to how to apply sketches to turning. It talks about creating shading, proportion, patterns, and using grain effects. Theres also a lot of information about different rims and feet as well as reference about the best types of wood to use and why it works so well. The book also details finishing coats (ie Oil, friction polish, wax etc) as well as using other types of decoration (like wire, metal sheets, paint). While my husband has got a few ideas from the book, I feel it would better suit someone who is looking to make bowls for art rather than general decoration. While my husband does produce beautiful bowls, the bowls pictured in the book strike me more as art objects rather than something practical you'd have in your home. Perhaps it is because we have children, but many of the items pictured in the book are the type of thing that would end up broken in our home. He has particularily liked the chapters about the feet and the rims because it has given him a few different ideas to change up his finishing work and make objects a little more complicatied. Overall for the price, it is good for inspiration in our case, but I feel it is better for someone looking to make extremely detailed bowls that I imagine are very time consuming.

An excellent book covering a subject often overlooked but so important if your work is to look good. And introduces some new ideas to keep your work fresh.

Have you ever made something and wondered why it doesn't look quite right? This book brilliantly explains why and gives clear guidance on how to achieve great results. As some of the other reviews have pointed out its not a book on how to turn but more of a technical guide to size and proportion. It is written in an easy to read manner and doesn't try to bog you down with unnecessarily complicated explanations. Highly recommended.
