Not Quite As Expected 10 Jan 2009
Format:Spiral-bound
This book is very basic, the content is aimed at someone who has absolutely no experience of woodlands. It describes items that in my view should be covered by the readers common sense. It is also aimed more at people organising charitable group work parties in woodlands, rather than individual woodland owners. It does not really have a lot of detail regarding tree species and their care requirements. Having read it, it has not really taught me anything I didint know already, and the safety instructions and tool selection chapter were particularly basic. I would not really recommend this book.

I bought this in order to help with the practical elements of my Degree course in Ecology and Conservation Management and it is fast becoming a bible for all matters 'Woodland'. Originally written for The British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV for short)this book will tell you how to plan and cost a fence, how to plant seedlings, how to prune or safely fell standing timber - how to tell what type of squirrels you are dealing with...in a very real sense you would have to try very hard to find a subject which is not, at least, touched upon in this book. There are undoubtedly more worthy tomes available but for common sense knowledge and interesting, easy, reading I don't beleive this book can be bettered. In my opinion anyone coming to any form of woodland project with little or no knowledge of the subject will be reassured and anyone with a good working knowledge will still be pleasantly surprised. Unlike many 'manuals' this is very obviously written by someone who has been there, done it and has now written the book about it!

A must for FS Leaders 13 Mar 2011
Format:Spiral-bound
An excellent reference for ONC L3 Forest School Leaders. Covers almost everything and helps support developing knowledge base as well as acting as a point of reference for planning and woodland management.

Everyone should buy this!
