5.0 out of 5 stars absolutely CAPTIVATING, 8 Mar 2011
This review is from: Woodenface (Paperback)
I could not put this book down, it was absolutely enchanting. I felt that a spell had been put on me as well.

The setting, both time and place, was described in detail and transported me into a new magical Yorkshire.

I love the characters in this book. The main character, Meg, is instantly likable. But she is not a simple girl and turns out to be a interesting and complex character. Her allies are also lovable as well as memorable and entertaining. The villains are equally memorable and sufficiently terrifying.

The mood of the book is both humorous and heart warming but also darkly magical. There is a fabulous balance between the two. The description and weaving of the magic throughout the novel is brilliantly done and very believable. This heightens the suspense as well as the wonder of the novel.

I feel that I have done a poor job in describing the wonder of this novel. I haven't read a book that left such an impression on me in such a long time. I was captivated and completely drawn into the story from the very first page until the last. Its rich, complex, and thoroughly entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars gothic folktale for all ages, 11 April 2009

I loved this book! My nephews and nieces were raving about it so I thought I'd give it a go... it's a brilliant story set in Yorkshire in the 1600s and although it's a nominally a young person's book, I would recommend it for anyone who likes a ripping good yarn, detailed characterisations all mixed up with a healthy dose of supernatural shenanigans. I know very little about the geographical and historical context, but the places and the people really came alive for me. The only bad part was turning the last page in the book, as the story obviously continues... Read it! Buy it for your children! And when the sequel comes out do the same with that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Old Magic, Witchcraft and cruel 'justice', 2 Dec 2008

Great characters, excellent feel of place and exciting bits of history (1650) with the warts and gibbet (that's a guillotine, infamous in Halifax) left in. No boring bits here. Set in Yorkshire in and around Halifax, this is a very good story with realistic characters. Some cool and some really not nice. The woodcraft and other folk magic is really interesting...the dancing dolls, the hawthorn mannikin that talks to Meg and the weird 'eye-ball.' This is a taste of old Yorkshire like I keep hoping The Spook's Apprentice books will be, but don't quite make it. If you like good characters, adventure, a bit of spookiness and that mix of both humour and nastiness (along the lines of Roald Dahl), you'll like this book. I'm looking forward to Book 2!
