Product Description

Product Description

This collection of short stories and poetry set in post-Ceausescu and post-cold war Romania takes readers on a journey through the author’s home town of Braila in the east of the country.

Exiled Romanian author Bogdan Tiganov explores social, religious and political issues with insightful frankness, through an array of colourful characters and narratives focusing on this newly, supposedly liberated world.

Tiganov’s stories offer an honest and rounded view of immigration like never heard before: the opportunities and the pitfalls, the reasons for and against mass migration, the pains suffered, the euphoric hope and optimism, the naivety and the greed.

This revised edition features brand new short stories and a new introduction from the author. Candid and exposing, this warts-and-all look at Romanian life with its dark undercurrent of wit cuts to the very heart of the country’s culture.

“These moving memories, stories and poems explore the mind-warping paranoia created by Romania’s notorious dictatorship, and are a brutally honest insight into the bleakness of its post-communist disillusion.”
Helena Drysdale

“A collection of short stories and poems, The Wooden Tongue Speaks uncannily distills the very essence of Romanians, from the small joys and beauty to familiar warts-and-all everyday domestic blights.”
Andrew Begg, Vivid

5.0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Must Read! 5 Jan 2011
By DJ
Format:Kindle Edition
Bogdan Tiganov has crafted an amazing literary collection within The Wooden Tongue Speaks Romanians: Contradictions & Realities. I thoroughly enjoyed the insights and perspectives offered by the high quality of short stories and poems found throughout this Kindle version. Bogdan Tiganov easily conveyed his vision through his impressive straightforward writing style which draws out real emotion from the reader. My favorite aspect throughout the stories was the intriguing and engaging cultural insights provided, which offers an intimate glimpse of the authors' home town of Braila. I truly believe that I have a newer, fresher perspective of the Romanian culture after reading this collection of hard-hitting poems and stories. The Wooden Tongue Speaks Romanians is an absolutely wonderful journey of which I am thankful to have been a part of and is certainly worthy of three thumbs up and six stars if that were possible.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Wooden Tongue Speaks 3 Jan 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
The Wooden Tongue Speaks by Bogdan Tiganov is a stimulating combination of short story and poetic prose. With unique style we are taken on journeys through these likeable yet estranged characters' lives during a fascinating period of Eastern European history, with insightful observation. The Wooden Tongue Speaks is a recommend read for anyone intrigued by the forgotten, then unseen and overlooked. An excellent and brave debut - the format of which works well on the Kindle.
