Product Description

Battery version of Salty for Wooden Thomas Railways Salty is easy-going, friendly and very practical. He also enjoys telling stories revolving around the sea and fantasy. His seafaring ways and accent are sometimes ridiculed by the other engines, but his usefulness almost always helps the others overlook that.

My two year old son loves his Salty. It is a very well made engine and despite being dropped both in the bath and once in a bucket of water he still works well (once dried out and battery changed). Salty can haul or shunt about 5 carriages so he's quite powerful.

My son's favorite train 17 Mar 2011

I bought my son the battery-powered Salty for X-mas. This is by far his favorite as all of his other trains are hand-push only. Other reviews mention that the battery-powered trains jump off of the tracks. This is occasionally true, but when going down hills the battery powered trains actually stay on the track better than the hand pushed cars because their momentum is limited. Salty handles tracks that merge or split much better than I expected. He cannot, however, handle a switch-T track. He can pull a lot more cars then I imagined.

Tricks to building a battery-powered Salty track design.

1. Try not to use 2 small curves back to back heading in opposite directions.
2. You can use switch tracks, but always plan for Salty to take the straight path.
3. Watch how your pieces fit (especially bridges). Large gaps can cause issues.
4. Make sure the track Salty is on is basically one big loop.

Slow and steady 11 Jan 2008

We've had battery-operated Salty for almost 2 years, and he's still on the original batteries. He's pretty durable--very limited paint chipping, even though my son went through a stage where Salty was allowed to drive off the table onto the hardwood floor with some frequency! He can pull long trains (20+ cars) without the magnets coming apart. While Salty moves slowly (much more so than, say, Jet Engine Thomas), and he sometimes gets stuck while pulling long trains up hills or around corners, he always manages to get up the hill or around the corner after a moment or two. I suggest buying two battery-operated engines so you can have them race.

Just what I expected, a good toy for toddlers 11 Jan 2011

I read reviews before I bouth this, and some said it falls off the track or the wheels slip; I had no such problems. My son abuses this train by rolling it on the floor, making the motor wind, which isn't a good idea. Even so, we've had it for I guess 5 months or so, and it works just fine. I heard that if the wheels slip, you can take a piece of scotch tape and roll the wheels over it to remove any oil or debris- it works! I would reccomend this train.
