4.0 out of 5 stars Shogi learner 26 Mar 2007

I am very impressed with the game Shogi. My wife taught me to play. It is more dynamic than chess.

This game board and pieces are tough for me to rate because I don't have great experience with the game in general. For me, an instuction booklet for basic moves and names of the pieces would have been nice, but it is easy enough to find and print that info on the internet.

My wife said the pieces are usually red on the flip side which helps avoid confusion while playing. The pieces in this set are not red on the flip side. She does like the wood pieces (plastic would have been bad). My wife gave this game the four stars, and I deferred to her on this subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic traditional all-wooden Japanese chess-variant Shogi! 1 Feb 2010

This is brilliant, and a steal for anyone who has ever tried looking for Shogi in game stores in their hometown. You just can't find it! And if you do find it, it's terribly overpriced. Who wants to pay hundreds of dollars for a board game? This is the traditional game of "Shogi", a Japanese variant of chess that includes promotable pieces, and pieces that, when taken from the opponent, can be "dropped" back into the playing field and used against him or her.

Though the rule-sheet leaves something to be desired, it does convey all the basic rules in an easily understandable format. All the pieces are perfectly shaped, carved out of wood, and even sized appropriately based on their rank and relative value. When promoted, the reverse side of promotable pieces bears a red character stating the piece's new rank. A few extra pawns are even included, in case you lose a piece.

All in all, a terrific game, and fun for the whole family!

4.0 out of 5 stars Chess with burning passion 16 Jan 2008

Think of a chess game that allows you to capture your opponents pieces and place them on your side of the board, then you might imagine that which is shogi.

The Board itself is nice and durable and the pieces are made of a decent wood. But I do find myself wishing for a better way to hold of carry the board and pieces. This of coarse can be fixed by getting something yourself but it would be convenient to get one with the initial product.

All in all I recommend this product for the anyone willing to take the challenge and also willing to memorize some Japanese Kanjis (Japaneses symbols).
