Product Description

Designed for serious woodworkers, weekend crafters, and chess enthusiasts, this collection of nine different chess designs includes traditional designs of kings, rooks, and pawns as well as butterfly-themed and tool-themed designs. Using the popular compound cutting technique, woodworkers can create dramatic three-dimensional pieces by wrapping the patterns provided around a block of wood and cutting both sides. Layout patterns, starting cuts, finishing techniques, and an overview of various kinds of wood are accompanied by full-colour photographs of each playing piece. Also included is a pattern for creating a beautiful inlay playing board.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 27 April 2008

I was new to using a scroll saw; I did have experience with other tools as I like to tinker with various building projects. However, this illustrated book walked me and my 10 year old son threw building an entire chess set and board. It is the center piece of our family room and we use it almost daily. The explanations and pictures were excellent. I highly recommend this book to anyone that is looking to making their own chess set.

I do suggest that one has a miter saw and a table saw as well as the scroll saw. I also used a router to finish of the edges of the chess board.

I felt this book was what I expected. Very good explanations and great photos. Was very pleased with my purchase. I was a little dissapointed by the error in the photo on the front. Chess players would not approve.
White square on the right please. I plan to make two of the sets from the book.

Patterns are very crisp. Book has great helpful hints to assist you prior to the time you start sawing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Formal to whimsical 19 Jan 2009

If you want to make a wooden chess set and don't want to turn it, get this book. There are many more designs here than I could have imagined; some are traditional, and some are hilarious. Some of the animal-themed pieces would work very nicely as standalone pieces.

Compound cutting isn't the easiest thing to do on a scroll saw, but it's a blast; you cut here, you cut there, and then you open up the package to see what comes out. I highly recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Chess Set for Scroll Saws 8 April 2009
By Galen J. Gorence - Published on Amazon.com
Book was very useful and patterns are decent. Would have been nice if they would have put more copies on each page to reduce the number of coppies I had to make. I ended up coping on the front and back with the back rotated 180 degrees to save on paper. Not an easy project but will be beautiful when complete.
