Product Description

Product Description

This first volume deals with the selection, sharpening and maintenance of woodcarving tools. Truly sharp edges are essential for effective carving, and the author's detailed instructions and clear illustrations show how the right results can be achieved every time. Though the emphasis is on traditional chisels and gouges, the use of power tools is also covered, and ancillary tools such as mallets, abrading tools, knives, punches and scratch stocks are all considered in detail.

About the Author

Chris Pye has been a professional woodcarver for more than 20 years and writes extensively on the subject. His previous GMC books are Carving on Turning (1995), Lettercarving in Wood (1997), Relief Carving in Wood (1998) and Elements of Woodcarving (2000).

4.0 out of 5 stars Woodcarving: Tools, Materials & Equipment-Volume 1, 24 Feb 2004
This review is from: Woodcarving: Tools, Materials & Equipment - Volume 1: Tools, Materials and Equipment: v. 1 (Paperback)
A very good book. If you are interested in wood carving you should acquire several books first-with this being one of them. If you haven't held a carving tool yet, read a book on the subject before buying any tools, a fool and his money soon part. Amazon has several good books that cover carving. This book helped me understand the importance of having sharp tools and all the different types of materials that can be carved.

You have to really know how to sharpen your tools properly or you will have to pay someone to do it for you. I bought two old sheffield tools that looked like they were sharpened on the concrete off the back of a moving pick-up truck. Using this book, I was able to get a real nice edge on a good quality steel.

These books encouraged me to buy the best tools we could afford, so for Christmas my wife went all out for a 12 piece set from Ashley Iles and a Ray Gonzalez tool. There are alot of different manufactures that make tools and equipment you need to know what you're doing before you jump in the water. Woodcarving: Tools, Materials & Equipment-Volume 1 & 2 I'm glad I own them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book from master craftsman, 12 Mar 2008
This review is from: Woodcarving: Tools, Materials & Equipment - Volume 1: Tools, Materials and Equipment: v. 1 (Paperback)
I agree with the first reviewer of this book: if you feel like starting carving, read this first. It's very easy to read, with good up to date pictures and illustrations. It will help you understand tools, good practice, and the like. Chris Pye is clearly a master at what he does; he balances his enthusiasm with the pragmatism gained from having taught (and made a living from) carving over many years. I've bought this before shelling out on tools and equipment.

The only criticism I would make is that this book should not have been split into two volumes, it would have been better as a single logical reference text. These books don't cover how to carve. You'll have to buy, e.g. Chris Pye's Lettercarving book. Given this, it feels like the Guild of Master Craftsmen are milking this a bit.

I also had a rye smile when Chris talked about boxed sets of tools being questionable. He now endorses a full range of tools, etc., including....boxed sets of chisels!

All in all, excellent books.

Dont expect to be told how to carve with this book. Its all about the 'tools of the trade'. Particularly how to care for and sharpen them. Just what the doctor ordered. Well recommended to all who need guidance in a subject that some carvers find difficult. This book is as good as it gets as a 'how to' guide.
