Dark secrets and dangerous magic permeate the enthralling second installment of the Iron Witch trilogy (Booktrust )

Fast, quick paced and thrilling, keeping you on the tips of your toes till the very end . . . The writing was beautiful . . . lyrical and whimsical (Excellent Reads 20120325)

5.0 out of 5 stars The Iron Witch book 2 9 Feb 2012
By Sarah Gibson TOP 50 REVIEWER TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
I loved The Iron Witch when I read it last year so it has been a very long wait for The Wood Queen - I literally could not wait to get my hands on this book! Karen Mahoney picks up the story not long after the ending of The Iron Witch so Donna finds herself on trial with the alchemists for the loss of the last of the precious elixir. Not only is Donna in trouble with the alchemists but she also has the Wood Queen on her case again and this time Aliette is using Donna's mother for leverage.

So our heroine has a lot going against her but as I would expect she isn't going to go down without a fight. Donna is going to do whatever it takes to save her mum and she isn't going to let the alchemists walk all over her either. It was good to learn a bit more about the alchemists history and the different orders but I still have a lot of questions about them. The more we find out the harder it is to figure out just who Donna should trust but it's quite clear she has some powerful enemies.

I'm really interested in the new abilities that Donna is starting to develop and can't wait to see how that continues in the next book. The author has taken the series in a very different direction to the one I was expecting and I can't wait to see how that plays out - I have a feeling that things are going to get very exciting in The Stone Demon!

I absolutely loved Xan in the first book but I found myself feeling a bit less sure of him in this instalment. I still think he's hot (and there is a fab kissing scene with him and Donna!) but I found myself wondering just what he was up to and I'm not sure if he is 100% trust worthy. He was just a little too secretive at times and it makes me worry about what he could be hiding. I may be proved completely wrong though so I haven't written him off yet but I did find myself routing more for Nav in this book. I have a feeling he's been keeping his feelings for Donna a secret and I'm wondering if we could see them turn into more than just friends. Either way I think Nav is a great character and I love the fact that he is so supportive of Donna and always there when she needs him.

The Wood Queen is a great instalment in the series that has left me desperate for the final book in the trilogy! If you enjoyed The Iron Witch then The Wood Queen is a must read. If you haven't started this series yet then you really should read the books in order but I would highly recommend the series to any YA urban fantasy fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Builds Excitement & Anticipation 19 Jun 2012

Please bear in mind this is book 2 in the series and may therefore contain spoilers.

The Wood Queen picks up where The Iron Witch ends with Donna facing the consequences of her actions from the Order. The Order and their inner workings are still shrouded in secrecy. Clues are alluded to but revelations are not directly given. This book requires active participation in order to gather all the information and piece it together. Full of astounding plot twists, surprise revelations and action packed. Vivid imagery and amazing world building all combine together to create a stunning sequel.

The character development is amazing. Navin is still the wonderfully loyal friend, very supportive of Donna even if her new abilities frighten him a little. I would really like to see him with someone but not Donna.

Donna's growing powers surprise everyone especially Donna herself. Her need to learn more about her own history is palpable through the pages. I can literally feel a huge jaw dropping twist coming but honestly couldn't tell you in which direction it is going to go. Karen Mahoney is certainly keeping us on our toes with this series.

I love Donna and Xan's relationship. The image of a shirtless Xan had me swooning ;D There are suspicions concerning Xan's agenda and yes you can see that he really wants his wings back but I feel that he is the perfect match for Donna. They have fabulous chemistry with an underlying tenderness on both sides.

The introduction of new characters add to the multi-layered plot. Especially Robert and Iris.

Robert is an interesting character that I think can help Donna but he has his own secrets. The best way to describe him is enigmatic. I felt as if we had only touched the tip of the iceberg with him. I am hoping that this doesn't turn into a love triangle though, I like Donna with Xan too much.

Iris is another character that is surrounded in mystery. What is her relationship with Xan? Where did she go and why?

The Wood Queen is full of secrets waiting to be revealed, maintaining the excitement and anticipation set in The Iron Witch. I cannot wait to discover the truth in The Stone Demon.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Wood Queen 6 Jun 2012
Format:Paperback
Having loved the first book in this trilogy "The Iron Witch", I couldn't wait for it's sequel to arrive....And boy! I was NOT disappointed. As with all good writers, Karen Mahoney has grown into her role as a storyteller; her characters spring to life off the page and she makes Ironwood seemingly very real (and scary!)
The dialogue exchanges are both believable and modern, and the book moves along at a pace that's not exactly gentle but not overwhelmingly fast either.
With this book, Ms Mahoney has grown as a writer and achieved what all writers should do; and that is to make follow up books even better than their original counterparts. I for one, will be interested to see how this talented British author finishes off her first trilogy of books. I bet she manages a surprise or two, that's for sure!
