I came across Sarah McQuaid after listening to a preceding programme and both the song that was being played (When A Man's In Love), her voice and guitar playing transfixed me.
To this day there have been very few artists that have made me sit up and take notice. Yes, I love listening to the lower registers of mezzo and contralto voices - Sarah McQuaid's conveys a mellow, mature warmth. Yes, I love listening to fingerpick guitarists and when you add the two together with a third love of mine, celtic and folk music the package was compelling.
So far there have been two album releases - the first, When Two Lovers Meet, is based on the celtic idiom, the second, I Won't Go Home `Til Morning takes advantage of her time living in the Southern Appalachian region in America. She has also released an album with Zoe Pollock (of Sunshine On A Rainy Day fame) called Crow, Coyote, Buffalo under their group name Mama.
Sarah McQuaid is an exponent of the DADGAD style of guitar playing. This is a kind of modal tuning that has found its way into celtic music, although some non-celtic musicians have used the tuning in their material - eg Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin.
The first album, When Two Lovers Meet contains a selection of gentle, celtic songs and instrumentals. There is an inherent intensity in all of the tracks and you can sense the research that has gone in to producing such quality works. The second album, I Won't Go Home `Til Morning includes covers of Peggy Seeger's The Chickens They Are Crowing and Bobbie Gentry's Ode To Billy Joe - two songs that are tailor made for Sarah.
I very strongly recommend listening to Sarah McQuaid or even going to see her on one of her tours which takes in the UK, Southern Ireland, America, the Netherlands, Germany and Canada.
One beautiful voice, one immaculate guitarist, two first rate albums and one very grateful listener equates to five stars.
