I began my prog-life with the 'neo-prog' movment of the early 1980s. To see a compilation with Marillion, Pallas and IQ on it is like someone telling me I was right all along. I know most of the stuff on CD3 and CD4 but the first 2 CDS are fairly unfamiliar. I bought this because it will be great on holiday. Every year people moan at me because I play IQ cds from start to finish. No longer, now it will be 5 hours of stuff that sounds like IQ but isn't.

I love Opeth and this is one of their best tracks. It is produced by Steven Wilson. One earlier reviewer critcised the non-inclusion of Porcupine Tree but at least the mainman is there producing this. I'm enjoying discovering early prog music for the first time. It's so approachable after spending too long with Marillion and Pendragon. Spocks Beard are there with a great song from 'Snow'. Dream Theater sneak in with 'Pull me Under'.

Like a lot of the other reviewers I could drone on about some of the bands 'missing in action'. I love The Flower Kings too but this is a fantastic start and will lead most listeners onto a journey into a million others time-lines and prog-fractures. Don't forget to buy a Genesis cd to sit along with this!

The reviewers who rate this box 1 star clearly didn't read the liner notes, which clearly state there were limitations due to licensing issues.
This explains why Genesis & King Crimson aren't represented.
And this is actually a good thing, since any real fan of prog ALREADY HAS EVERYTHING BY THESE 2 BANDS!!
So, here we get to sample stuff a lot of fans may not have: i.e. Steve Hillage, Magna Carta, Rare Bird, etc
And we get a nice sample of the more recent prog bands, which many of us old folks aren't aware of, and might appreciate.

So, don't listen to the naysayers...
This is a very enjoyable and handy box, and WELL WORTH PICKING UP!

Prog rock will never go away, it will just be swept under the carpet and brought out for an airing from time to time as a new generation of music lovers become aware of it. The quintessential progressive rock track is lengthy, has a beginning, a middle and an end - so many of the songs here simply don't qualify as "prog", they are simply shorter, more commercial numbers put out by the bands in question in an attempt to cross over into the singles market. For example, Camel's tracks here - both under five minutes - are just itsy bitsy nothings, it would have been better to have included the track "Ice" in its entirety (ten minutes), now that really is prog! Or even a complete side of Snow Goose. One of the qualities that identified the original progressive scene was creating a "whole LP side" track. Some very notable bands are conspicuous by their absence, no doubt there are still problems with liscencing from the likes of Pink Floyd.

There is nothing here that will make a time-tested lover of prog buy this collection, but it provides an interesting if not comprehensive introduction to the genre for newbies.

The biggest issue is "What is prog Rock?" Plenty of the artistes on this compilation produced brilliant, musically challenging, extended music. but mostly what we get here is the shortened popular version of their output.

As a taster collection, to introduce the casual listener it works OK. People of a certain age may buy it to fill in gaps from their CD collections 'cos the LP's can't be played anymore.

But the compilers have missed a big point here. Prog was full of longer compositions. More artistes, longer selections would have conveyed th epoint of prog better.

Oh - and just 'cos a band has some fiddly bits in their songs (It Bites etc) does NOT make them "Prog"

Come on guys, its not all that bad, sure there are many more 21st century bands that could have been included but it would have had to be a box set of six discs instead of four! It does have Dream Theatre and The Reasoning but I take your point Moog. Perhaps the second Instalment can have the likes of Karnataka, Kaipa, Knight Area, Kino, Jadis, Riverside, the brilliant Martin Orford etc etc and I thought it was Prog law to have Jem Godfrey and Johnny Mitchell included somewhere. However for those who have grown-up listening to bits of prog but never bought any, I'd say this is a great album to start with.
