Book Description

Wonderwise books bridge the gap between stories and facts, perfect for building children's love of learning and reading.

About the Author

Mick Manning (born in Yorkshire, England, 1959) and Brita Granström (born in Eskilstuna, Sweden, 1969) work together as a team sharing the illustration and text. They have been producing award-winning non-fiction picture books for almost twenty years. They show that the best non-fiction for children can be scholarly, albeit with a light touch, and can have some of the imagination-stretching qualities of fiction.

They are well known for their exciting performances involving readings and live drawing using overhead camera projection (often involving participation from members of the audience) all mixed with an audio-visual presentation. They appear on a regular basis at major UK book festival venues such as Bath, Cheltenham and Edinburgh International Book Festival. They have appeared at The Royal Society Science Festival and have celebrated The Big Draw at various venues including The Imperial War Museum.

They have worked closely to support libraries and schools, performing voluntarily to school classes in the UK and Sweden. Most recently they visited the American Library Association Conference, Texas where they also visited a Hispanic school and libraries in the area.

Many of Manning & Granström's books are translated into a number of languages, including Chinese, German, Greek, Danish, Japanese, Norwegian, Swedish and Slovakian.

For the last 12 years Mick & Brita have created, written and illustrated a monthly 5-page gentle pre-school series called 'Max and Kate' for the critically acclaimed US children's magazine Ladybug.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun look at animals 16 Jan 2014
By Pam Dhinsa VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This is nice non-fiction book for younger children. It's good for Reception or Year One aged children (4-6yrs). it has large illustrations and appeals to children because it compares the animal's bodies to human ones. It's not just a book about animals, it makes children think about their own body too.

My six year old enjoyed me reading it to her, but she wasn't really excited enough by it to want to read it again. With books that she really loves she will want to re-read them again and again, hence the four star rating instead of five.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderwise: My Body, Your Body 24 Dec 2013
By S Riaz HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This is one of a series of information books for young children (approx 3-5), covering a wide range of topics in the natural world and early science. This book looks at bodies and the five senses, in a simple and understandable way. For example, for sight, the book urges the child to look at their eyes in a mirror and then compares human vision to various other creatures - such as an eagle, a giant squid and animals which are nocturnal. There are some good activity suggestions at the end of the book, which makes this a great choice if you are home schooling, or simply want some constructive and educational ideas to do on a rainy day. The illustrations are bright and colourful and ths book will interest and appeal to young children.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun enough but not terribly compelling 20 Mar 2014
By Peter A. J. Bennett TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This is a nice colourful book which sets out to teach young children how their sense and experience of the world differs from members of the animal kingdom.

It therefore covers a number of areas, noting for example :-

- a dog's sense of smells is "as much as a million times better than ours"
- a giraffe's tongue is long enough to clean its ears with

and

- a blue whale's voice is the loudest voice on Earth

The five senses are covered along with internal vs. external skeletons, muscles and skin.

It is nicely enough presented and my nearly five year old enjoyed it, but I can not see him requesting it again and again as he does with some of his books and, from an adult perspective, I don't feel it is educational enough to try to encourage him to frequently revisit it.

So, I do see what it is trying to do but it only delivers a three star experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars Captivating enough to make it interesting. 20 Mar 2014

As any parent will tell you, getting children to read a book that is regarded as "educational" is like getting blood from a stone, this is one of the rare ones that breaks that stereotype and just seems like a normal everyday kids book.

I enjoyed reading it to my youngest and the illustrations are top-notch, it's not one i'd reach for straight away come story time but as she gets older i'm sure we'll go back to it to learn a bit more, as other reviewers say though... it's that factor that steals it back from a five star rating, because we won't use it daily or even weekly, it comes in at a four.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating facts, well presented 20 Mar 2014
By S. Jones VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This is a bright and colourful 32 page book aimed probably at advanced foundation and year 1 and 2 level children, and maybe even older children can learn from it too..

The basic format consists of a left hand page showing a cartoon of a child with a suggestion to listen, stick out your tongue, think about your teeth, and so on, with the facing page having cartoon illustrations of various animals, with each spread describing a physical feature of the body, comparing and contrasting the human version of, for example, teeth, with crocodile and snake versions. There are very interesting facts about each. As an adult I learned plenty of things, and our five year old will learn lots of useful information to impress his classmates and his teacher.

There are suggested activities towards the end of the book encouraging children to be active and to make a book about senses and to make a model of a super-animal with some of the special characteristics of animals mentioned earlier in the book. These are clever and fun ideas to follow on from reading the book.

I'm happy with the book and think our boy will benefit from and enjoy it for some years yet.

The text about each illustration is probably too advanced for many younger children to read by themselves but it's a book which is more fun to share with parents, grandparents and carers anyway.

5.0 out of 5 stars Appealing, educational book 20 Mar 2014
By H. Eaton VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Attractive, interactive book that informs and entertains children. There are interesting facts to learn about humans and animals and fun features that encourage younger children to investigate for themselves - observing and comparing.

My 6 year old daughter has returned to the book many times because the style and content is very engaging for her age group.

What is it?
'My Body Your Body', is a book about human and animal bodies, beautifully written and illustrated by Mick Manning and Brita Granstrom. In making comparisons between human and animal senses, children are helped in understanding that although we have similar senses to animals, our own senses have developed in different ways.

What's it for?
Wonderwise is an award winning series of books for the younger child. Educational in content and covering many different subjects, for example: time zones, the Earth, animals, water, mothers, sky and space, machines and many more.

Who's it for?
The Wonderwise books are suitable for young children, early readers, children with learning difficulties, parents (to look through and discuss with their children) and schools. My daughter is eight years of age and she loves the series.

What's good about it?
'My Body Your Body'
A bright and colourful cover showing an illustration of a large gorilla and a little girl.
A good size of 27cm x 20cm
Beautifully illustrated throughout in bright vibrant colours.
Extremely educational in content. Facts written in bite size and easy to remember chunks.
Text in a easy to read font size.

What's bad about it?
A little expensive for only 32 pages (this is only a minor complaint)

In summing up!
A great book in an amazing series ... collect them all.
