Ten one-word titles might convey a sense of Picture Center's minimal approach; even more so the hazy monochrome sleeve image of a mountain. But in Picture Center's case, minimalism shouldn't be confused with tunelessness: shades of Cocteau Twins and floaty showgazers Slowdive abound in the icy desolation of "Fade" and "This". However, while the chord sequences may have been plucked out of the ether, the best songs on The Wonders Of God's Heaven And Earth are rooted in workaday melancholia, misunderstood conversations and, in some cases, dying relationships. This is the most beautiful CD I have ever had the priveledge of owning. It oozes class, sweetness, depth, passion, while remaining perfectly simple. Is it Miles's guitar that does it? Or Mary's perfect voice? I don't know, but it works incredibly well. Listen to it in an evening by candlelight with a glass of wine, and you will be in love.
