Product Description

John Cox directs this dark, tangled Los Angeles murder tale based on the real quadruple homicide in Laurel Canyon's Wonderland Avenue in the summer of 1981. Val Kilmer stars as John Holmes, once the world's biggest porn star but now washed up, broke and wasted on drugs. He becomes implicated in the murders of four members of the Wonderland Gang after the police investigation uncovers a dangerous world of violence and gangland rivalry surrounding Holmes, his wife Sharon (Lisa Kudrow) and his innocent teenage girlfriend, Dawn (Kate Bosworth).

4.0 out of 5 stars Kilmer Returns ! 9 Aug 2004
Format:DVD
Stylish, gritty and yet factual account of one the most notorious murders in recent Hollywood history - the Wonderland Avenue murders.
Even more fascinating is the fact that one of the alleged killers was the king of porn himself - John Holmes - who has always been branded as the "biggest" porn star - and was the inspiration for 1998 hit Boogie Nights.
As no one was ever convicted of the killings, the film creatively tries to explain the events that culminated in the Wonderland Murders.
Val Kilmer gives a truly compelling performance, and it's good to see him in a challenging role once more, with a great supporting cast, from Lisa Kudrow (from Friends), the beautiful Kate Bosworth, Dillon McDermot (TV's The Practice, Party Monster) and Josh Lucas (American Psycho, Hulk).
Director James Cox tells the story with startling energy, and is helped by a fantastic 80's soundtrack !
Reminiscent of 1995's Natural Born Killers, the reality of the Hollywood underbelly has never been quite so compelling - go get it, you won't be disappointed !

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good, very underrated 2 Oct 2006
Format:DVD
I don't understand why this film is more well known. It really is a very good crime thriller. The story is a good one and all the performances are great, Val Kilmer giving it his very best. There is a lot of drug taking and the violence is really brutal which may or may not put people off.

My advice is don't be put off and if you are a fan of crime thrillers you will find much to enjoy here.

This film is based on the true story of the Wonderland Avenue killings in Los Angeles, John Holmes (Val Kilmer) is an ex-porn star who gets involved with a group of drug dealers and that's where his problems start.

John Holmes and his new found friends decide to rob a crime boss of drugs, guns and cash by the name of Eddie Nash, but what they don't realise is who he is until they are actually doing the job, but they go ahead and finish to job anyway.

It does not take long for Eddie Nash to work out who has robbed him, but does he take his revenge?, or does someone else beat him to it?

This is a really good gritty film, with fine performances from the entire cast, for me Val Kilmer and Eric Bogosian (Eddie Nash) stand out most of all and are on excellent form, in Kilmers best performance I've seen from him.

The film is paced and told very well, it does show various people taking drugs, plus there's some violent scenes too, but for me at least nothing over the top, a very good film overall, well worth taking a look at.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definately recommended! 15 April 2009

I watched this after a friend recommended it to me. Had never heard of the film and was really suprised, as the previous reviewer said, that it wasnt more well known. This film tells the story of John Holmes and ex porn star who has got into drugs and the wrong crown. The story tells two points of view regarding the grusome murders that took place on Wonderland Drive in Hollywood. Val Kilmer makes a stellar performance and if you like areal nitty gritty film (especially based on a true story) then give this film a try.

4.0 out of 5 stars WONDERLAND 5 Oct 2009
Format:DVD
I'd been after this film for ages after watchin a documentary on the wonderland murders, and it was well worth the wait. As in The Doors,Val Kilmer seems perfect for the lead role and any fans wont be disappointed. I dont want to give anything away in a "total review" so i'll just say that if you're after seediness, charm, drug fuelled paranoia, wit, and violence, then give this a go. After all, this is based on real events and makes you wonder what people are really capable of.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not so wonderful ... 27 Feb 2014
Format:Amazon Instant Video
I think this film would have been far more enjoyable if I had been able to hear a word of what was being said - not because I am old and deaf - every actor mumbled and an increase in volume resulted in the music getting louder, which masked the dialogue. That meant that I kept missing what may/may not have been vital dialogue.

So ... it is hard to rate a film when the storyline is completely unclear - we really do need the option of sub-titles.
