5.0 out of 5 stars AT LEAST THE EIGHTIES DIDN'T HAVE FLARES! 16 April 2010

These four films from the late John Hughes are the cinematic equivalent of a good 3 minute pop song...perfect length,a beginning, middle and end,and should leave you with a smile on your face.Filmed in 86/87,the looks and fashions of the era(with one or two glaring exceptions)have dated quite well, certainly if compared to the sartorial horrors of the mid 70's and therefore these films seem quite modern despite being a quarter of a century old.The casts are attractive and talented and are,in the main, far too old for the characters that they are portraying but who cares?Three of these films are youth/high school orientated, the odd one out being the excellent Planes,Trains and Automobiles with Steve Martin and John Candy at their comedic best. Also worthy of note is Mary Stuart Mastersons moving portrayal of a georgeous tomboy who only has eyes for a very slow on the uptake Eric Stolz in Some Kind Of Wonderful, which also features lovely Lea Thompson so no shortage of eye candy for us boys!So while we're at it,Annie Potts is the loveliest record store manager you ever did see in Pretty In Pink and Mia Sara in Ferris Buellers Day Off is...well,lovely!Any one of these films should make you feel better after watching it,because, after all, most of us enjoy a good pop song.Cinematically speaking,John Hughes was Lennon/McCartney at their best.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good movies, terrible box 10 Sep 2011
Verified Purchase
I am the right age to have watched John Hughes and his coming of age movies, and his pure comedy side (home alone etc). And I am never disappointed when I revisit my youth through the great movies in the 4 DVD set, as they are all great movies of the 1980's (Some kind of Wonderful, still has a deep meaning for me, and the story will be familiar to any teenager today). However, just one thing very much lets this box set down. The lurid neon pink and yellow box and the huge heart on the front. A simple cover with pictures of the movies themselves would have been in much better taste, and look a lot nicer on your bookshelf. Thus the movies are great, but the box cover is awful. Just buy it for the movies not the box, and because of the box only 4 stars.
