How exciting! On Wednesday I received the new Wonderful Life album by Black aka Colin Vearncombe and as he mentions 'a flash like that in your life' on his interview with David Easlea, as I was opening the cd case I had my own life flash and the same feeling of excitement I had back in 1989 when my sister came back from Italy with a compact cassette of the original Wonderful Life album she found in a small music shop in San Marino. For almost 2 years I looked for it in Spain and unable to find it I recorded the song from a radio station with an old cassette recorder that I still keep... Best sound quality ever! That's how much I loved and still love Colin's music.

Love, love, love the new CD2 and if I had to choose (luckily I don't need to :D) 'All We Need Is The Money', more than music, it feels like rapture. This album is what a real treat feels like. Colin, thank you for releasing this new work of art and specially for allowing us to have an insight into your world back then. Lots of Love, B.

For me, Black [Colin Vearncombe] is one of the finest singer-songwriters to have come out of the 1980s, and is still around, producing wonderful music for his small [but enthusiastic] group of devoted fans! This contains his 'famous' songs ['Sweetest Smile' and Wonderful Life'], but also some of the songs he still performs today [Everything's Coming Up Roses, for example], as well as B sides previously only available on vinyl ['Have It Your Own Way' and 'My Lover']. Wonderful music, beautifully packaged and informative sleeve notes - an artist with a voice as rich as Scott Walker, with interesting, thoughtful musical arrangements! BUY THIS NOW!

There remains an enthusiastic band of brothers & sisters who have grown up with Black aka Colin Vearncombe. I include myself in this group and had the pleasure of seeing him in concert & meeting him onboard the Thekla in Bristol in April 2013. The issue of this deluxe version of Wonderful Life - his first album - is a timely reminder that Colin is a songwriter of enormous talent capable of crafting terrific tunes married to poignant lyrics. Together they capture the 'that's how I feel' quality that for me marks out the best from the rest. This is a terrific collection of songs - warm, accessible, well crafted and with an '80's production that sounds sharp and relevant today. The extra tracks add genuine value to a great package and make it excellent value for money. Of course it contains the famous Wonderful Life, an enduring classic, but keep listening and there's more quality songs waiting to be discovered or re-enjoyed including the slow burn brilliance of Sweetest Smile. If you're reading this and wondering my advice is don't hesitate to start your journey into the music of Colin Vearncombe with this album, it'll be a rewarding decision

A wonderful album that has not taken any wrinkles!! To discover or rediscover with its melodies full of melancholy and irony that makes you feel nostalgic from the 80's.. as bonus a second CD containing rare B-sides, remixes, the first original version of the Hit "Wonderful Life"... with a booklet where the artist engages in his memories and feelings today.. that makes it a collector's item!! Colin Vearncombe aka Black is a complete artist with an unique and mesmerizing voice.. songwriter and performer, currently he keeps on following his musical path by giving intimate and warm gigs!! ..and his artistic path by writing poems illustrated with sensual watercolors.. please give a visit on his official website by using his real name ;) let you touch by his soulful, elegant and deep register and meet a particular artist who knows how to stay true to himself ; and now.. just let you listen and love this back in time :) Kxxx

I too got the vinyl first, but then the CD enticed me with extra tracks (i'd heard Ravel In The Rain on the b-side of Sweetest Smile).
The album opens with the classic laidback summer vibe that is Wonderful Life, and ends proper with the extended version of the sublime Sweetest Smile. But, it's the stuff in between that excites.
"Roses" was a single (i had the white vinyl) and has that slightly dated 80's rock feel to it that propells it along nicely. "Sometimes For The Asking" is anothert mildly rocky track. But then, Colin gets into a little ballad territory with the likes of "Paradise" that sounds like the title suggests: all clouds of fluff and tickling bells. There's a touch more rockiness in "I'm Not Afraid" and then comes the rather odd yet enchanting "Blue" which sways like a fever. Another good brace of songs follow but the closer (of the vinyl), upon which we enter a more expermental zone.
"Ravel" is a smart little Film Noir piece like lollops along on a bass string. "Sixteens" give us a bit of sinister sounding heavy-guitar riffery, while "It's Not You Lady Jane" rattles along on a confused time signiture but is nontheless beguiling. But, like the vinyl, we have to end on a ballad and "Hardly Star-crossed Lovers" fills that need perfectly with just piano and vocals. Beautiful!
Loved this album way back when and still do today.
