Review

This is a very practical and entertaining window into the baby's first year and a half. van de Rijt and Plooij have observed and found the vulnerable times in an infant's development that I independently came to in my book Touchpoints --(Perseus)

Anyone who deals with infants and young children will want to read 'The Wonder Weeks.' This book will open parents' eyes to aspects of their children's growth, development, changing behavior, and emotional responsiveness that they might otherwise not notice or find puzzling and distressing. --(Catherine Snow, Ph.D., Shattuck Professor of Education, Harvard Graduate School of Education).

Van de Rijt and Plooij's work on infant development has enormous value for clinical use and scientific application. Not only have they explained the periods of puzzling, difficult behavior in infancy which so worry parents, they have also shown how these behaviors mark developmental leaps and have described the stages in the infant's understanding. Together, this gives parents and professionals soundly based insight into babies' developing minds. What's more, van de Rijt and Plooij have described the play and communication that work best with babies at different ages and thus helped parents understand and connect sensitively with their babies. This parent-child connection is the major prerequisite for the development of secure, well-adjusted children. 'The Wonder Weeks' is essential reading for everyone who works with infants: pediatricians, social workers, psychologists, and, of course, parents. --(John Richer, Ph.D., Dip. Clin. Psychol., consultant clinical psychologist and Head of Pediatric Psychology, Department of Pediatrics, John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, England)

Product Description

"The Wonder Weeks. How to stimulate your baby's mental development and help him turn his 10 predictable, great, fussy phases into magical leaps forward" describes in easy-to-understand terms the incredible developmental changes and regression periods that all babies go through during the first 20 months of their lives.
The extended, white cover edition describes 2 more leaps in the mental development of your baby up to the end of the sensorimotor period.

The book offers guidance how to ...:

• Know when and why your baby is fussy

• Help him/her (and yourself!) get through / survive the fussy phases

• Get the most out of these developmental phases

The book is based on the scientific- and parental-world-changing discovery of a phenomenon: all normal, healthy babies appear to be more fussy at very nearly the same ages, regression periods, and sleep less in these phases.

A worldwide bestseller and sanity savior for parents around the globe.

These age-related fluctuations in need for body contact and attention (regression periods) are related to major and quite dramatic changes in the brains of the children. These changes enable a baby to enter a whole new perceptual world and, as a consequence, to learn many new skills. This should be a reason for celebration, but as far as the baby is concerned these changes are bewildering. He's taken aback -- everything has changed overnight. It is as if he has woken up on a strange planet.

The book includes:

• Week-by-week guide to baby's behavior

• When to expect the fussy behavior, what this implies (cranky, clingy, crying (the three C's) behavior) and how to deal with these regression periods (leaps)

• A description from your baby's perspective of the world around him and how you can understand the changes he's going through

• Fun games and gentle activities you can do with your child

3.0 out of 5 stars not that wonderful 10 Mar 2014

This book is ok but the layout is not easy. It encourages you to read the whole book when really all I qanted to be avle to do is go to the week of my babies age and see if there was a reason for his strange behaviour.
Since buying this book I have learnt to relax a bit and not to stress so much so am now not bothering with it.
It does have some nice developmental games in it.

This book has helped us to be a lot more sympathetic towards our little one when a "jump" is on the horizon. Instead of asking always "what is wrong?" … we are able to review where he is in his growth stage and actually realise that he is tackling some pretty serious development. Recommend!

3.0 out of 5 stars I really like some aspects of this book 30 Jun 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really like some aspects of this book, in particular the reassurance about what the fussy periods are about, when they're likely to come, and what games are age-appropriate to help build new skills. However I particularly dislike the almost exclusive focus on the role of the mother in rearing the child, and I find the descriptions of fussy behaviours in each chapter repetitive. I also wanted to know much more about what each leap really means developmentally - the summaries are pretty short and I didn't feel they were explained all that clearly. Glad I paid for the Kindle edition rather than the much more expensive paper book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good if you need reassurance, but........ 8 Jun 2014

This book helped me with Baby no 2. We had just got to one of those stages where she was crying all the time and I had no idea what to do about it! Believe me there are several in the 1st year.

After reading it I felt a lot better as it did reassure me that I wasnt the terrible Mother I thought I was, but when you read the whole book you will soon see what a cop out it is. Basically if your child is whingey, clingy, etc at any stage its because they are going through an important development stage. This book absolves you of all blame and tells you that you just need to keep your head down and carry on. Ummm!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really useful 29 April 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
We were really lucky as our little boy has been generally really well tempered and a good sleeper. When he started to have a few grizzly phases a friend mentioned "the wonder weeks" so I thought I'd read up on it. So far, this book has been spot on in terms of the developmental changes as well as the timings of the changes. It has been really useful in helping me to understand changes in my little boy's temperament and in explaining the mental milestones that babies reach. A really good read for new mums.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great gift for new parents! 29 July 2014
Format:Paperback
So far, so good - 6 months in this has been useful at every stormy period we have encountered. I'd buy this book for any friends who are new parents. Exactly as described, it is a hefty book with a lot of good info in it. I am completely clueless about babies and so sections on what games will stimulate and interest your little one at different stages were a nice extra. Helps me to maintain my sanity. Times when I just can't seem to do anything to settle or please my little girl I'll check this book, and if she isn't in a stormy phase I can at least pursue other ideas (turned out she was teething for example). I've also heard very good things about the accompanying app but not felt the need for it myself.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have!!! 5 Jun 2014

Just can't believe how many things I read I found familiar with what's been happening with our baby... I could have ticked off all the things it commented on without me actually realising until reading it how relevant all those changes and signs were to us as well! It has really put my mind at rest knowing that all those seemingly unusual things are actually normal development changes... I have been recommending this book to all my mummy friends too...!
