Product Description

Product Description

This text collects black-and-white photographs which together record not only the operations of the WLA, but also scenes of the countryside between 1939 and 1950. The collection, drawn from the albums of many ex-land girls, offers an insight into the people and places associated with the WLA. Many of the pictures are published for the first time and each is captioned, providing names and dates where possible, revealing historical and anecdotal detail which gives life to the scenes and personalities captured. Presenting training, occupations and the social activities of the Land Army women, the collection should evoke wartime memories and provide inspiration through its images of hope, strength and unity.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and Misleading, 6 Dec 2011
This review is from: The Women's Land Army (Britain in Old Photographs) (Paperback)
I was disappointed in this book, the title is misleading, it deals only with the WLA in Sussex. I proudly served in Lancashire and no mention was made of it, or of other counties.

If I had known this I would not have bought it.

5.0 out of 5 stars British Women in WWII, 23 Dec 2004
By Sylvia Oxenreider "sylvia_ox" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Women's Land Army (Britain in Old Photographs) (Paperback)
Starting in 1939, British women were called up for essential industries to replace men in the military service. The Land Girls worked on farms, many of them never having lived on one.

This is an excellent picture of the times, many photographs, not just official ones, but snapshots belonging to the women themselves.

This book would be valuable to a history student,or anyone interested in World War II, especially the contribution of women. It offers insight in the lives of the British people during the war. An interesting, non-fiction book.
