4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful personal accounts 16 Nov 2012

Compiled form diaries letters and memoirs, this account of the experience of women at the heart of the war is compelling. Told with admirable honesty, the stories capture the real life accounts of the chaos, tragedy and liberation of war. There are fascinating vignettes of quirky women, who felt out of their time - motor bike enthusiasts, society ladies, suffragettes. All with their own reasons for going to the front line. Wonderful, inspiring and a testament to the courage, compassion and adventurous spirit of these women. A lesson for our times.

4.0 out of 5 stars A change at Last! 24 Feb 2010
Women in the War Zone, written by Anne Powell is an incredibly useful insight into the role of nurses voluntary and trained in the Great War. it focuses not only on the Western Front but broadens horizons reaching as far as Russia. All of the accounts are those which can be found in the Imperial war Musuem and this book has been very helpful with my dissertation on Voluntary Aid Detachments. It is certainly worth a read if you would like to know how much women contributed to the war effort as men.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic 18 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The women in this book are all heroes and should be as well known as any winner of the VC. The writing is surprisingly modern and easy to follow, though I read a lot of WW1 history so am familiar with the context.. The attitudes to the war and the experiences incredibly diverse. It is also amazingly funny, British Nurses trapped behind the lines marching into a German Colonels office and quelling him while the Field Marshal waits outside. These are the women who won the vote, ran girl guides, founded hospitals, and formed the backbone of the generation that went on to live through a second world war. They are all admirable and I would have loved to meet every one of them, though I suspect I would have been put in my place had I suggested they did anything out of the ordinary.

Some accounts do not shy away from the suffering of the casualties, others are clearly a lighter escape for the writers, the mix is excellent.

I had previously read 'Diary of a Nursing Sister on the Western Front ' by Anon which was excellent and was pleased to see that she had also written under her own name in this book. Rarely does one got such a warts and all account and one cannot express enough admiration for the privations endured by these women and the terrible situations they had to deal with.
There is no better descriptions of the agony and futility of war.

This book exceeded my expectations and a must for any devote of the BBC drama Thr Crimson Field . It brings together diary extracts from across the Great War years and transports you into the various theatres of war both qualified nurses and volunteer ladies find themselves serving King and Country. In short :Brilliantly crafted chronologicdiary entries from inspiring women! Read empathise wonder and cry.
