a warm recommendation to other women travellers!, 29 Mar 2005

This review is from: Women Travel: First Hand Accounts from More Than 60 Countries (Rough Guide Specials) (Paperback)
I wrote one of the Brazil entries for this book ("The luckiest woman in Rio"). On reading the other contributions, I was awestruck - and still am - by the sheer spirit of my fellow contributors, not to mention their bravery, ingenuity and humour. When I met them at the launch party, my overwhelming feeling was of surprise! I'm not sure what I was expecting - maybe some kind of windburned, intense, convention of intellectuals - but here was a roomful of lively, likeable young women.
For any lively, likeable young woman who loves to travel (or is thinking about it), this book is still an essential read.
A book for *women* travellers might seem a tad anachronistic to some. The most crucial point about travel, however, is your exposure to other cultures. In many cultures worldwide, you will find variance between the life for men and the life for women. As you do, you'll also find opportunities (as this book shows) for insight, experience and fun that remain closed to male visitors.
To be a woman traveller is still a special gift in this amazing world: for anybody who's thinking of expanding their horizons, "Women Travel" will provide both inspiration and guidance, not to mention a highly entertaining read.
I'd just like to say that nobody from the publisher has solicited or authorised my review. Nor do I get royalties! But I thank Natania Jansz for her priceless encouragement. I hope she's still travelling!

This book is truely inspiring, opening my eyes to countries that I'd never considered travelling to and in some cases never even heard of before.
The accounts are written by women from many different backgrounds and situations helping to uncover the possibilities for independant travel, you may never have known existed. Giving you a better understanding of the countries, they're culture, the things to watch out for, the fear, the joy and the thrill of adventure.

Rough Guide Special: Women Travel, 31 Oct 2010
This review is from: Women Travel: First Hand Accounts from More Than 60 Countries (Rough Guide Specials) (Paperback)
This book is to be highly recommended and really is special, for it is a one-off: First-hand accounts from over 60 countries by intrepid female travellers. Some real adventure to enjoy from the comfort and safety of your armchair - plus, perhaps, inspiration to expand one's own expeditions, however modest.
