I could not put this book down. It was gripping from begining to end. The story is set over 5 decades taking you through World War II and Nazi Germany. This will read will have you gripped right through to the end. Barbara never fails to amaze she has written this superbly, with several storylines and an excellent twist at the end

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Read 3 May 2007
Format:Paperback
Over the years I've read a lot of Barbara's books, (and will be placing other online reviews of her works).

This novel I read back in January, it tells the story of Maximilian West, a man who seems to have it all, but what he doesn't allow people to see is that he has personal doubts. A number of women fall under his spell that are competitive and scheming, (sounds like a few people I know), but can any of them help him to be who is and be at ease with himself? Well, I'm not saying, you'll have to read it for yourself as I'm not spoiling the story for you.

This novel isn't one of her best, (well I didn't think so), but I did enjoy and found it a compelling read. :-)

1.0 out of 5 stars Barbara Taylor Bradford 8 Sept. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I did not finish this, the central character was exactly the type that these days incur the righteous opprobrium of the public. So may "Sirs" these days are called before select committees to explain their wrong doing and one suspects this character could end up the same way! It is an old work I appreciate but this type have been found out and therefore do not incur any sympathy whatsoever. I was looking for a light read and ended up feeling terribly annoyed I wasted money on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absorbing 11 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Yet another totally absorbing novel from this excellent novelist. As with so many of Barbara Taylor Bradford' s books you get fully gripped by the main characters and sucked into their complex lives. The unexpected twists and turns had me reading into the small hours over and over again but loving every minute of my journey.
