Review

This compilation of '3,241 quips, quotes and brilliant remarks' from women throughout history confirms once and for all which is the stronger sex...Denver Post, March, 2011...I thought on account of March being National Women s History Month, I might share a few of the more than 3,200 celebrity women s quotes compiled in a new book that came across my desk called 'Women Know Everything!' by Karen Weekes. The quotes are organized by subject, from Ability to Youth with a lot of serious and silly stuff in between. Although a lot of the book is dedicated to deep, contemplative advice from scholars, politicians and renowned writers, I headed straight for the jokesters, because I have no class. These quotes spoke to me personally, and I thought this would be an easy column. You know, steal other people s material? But it turned out to be hard to choose these quotes. Erma Bombeck needs her own section. As do several other ladies whose wise words contribute to 'Women Know Everything!'But we ll start with a country singer because I saw this quote first. Enjoy.Little-known fact about Dolly Parton: She s a true sage, and she should have gone into stand-up comedy. Of course, most people know her for her more obvious attributes, so you can imagine what her quote is about. I d like to point out that I have smallish feet, too, Dolly.'I have got little feet because nothing grows in the shade.' Dolly Parton, country singer Cats: 'Some people say that cats are sneaky, evil and cruel. True, and they have many other fine qualities as well.' Missy Dizick, writer and artist Dieting: 'I ve been on a constant diet for the last two decades. I ve lost a total of 789 pounds. I should be hanging from a charm bracelet.' Erma Bombeck, American humorist Exercise: 'I really don t think I need buns of steel. I d be happy with buns of cinnamon.' Ellen Degeneres, comedian and talk show host Fashion: 'I base most of my fashion sense on what doesn t itch.' Gilda Radner, comedian Housework: 'I hate housework. You make the beds, you wash the dishes, and six months later you have to start all over again.' Joan Rivers, comedian More housework: 'Nature abhors a vacuum. And so do I.' Anne Gibbons, cartoonist and illustrator Music: 'I worry that the person who thought up Muzak may be thinking up something else.' Lily Tomlin, comedian Normalcy: 'Normal is in the eye of the beholder.' Whoopi Goldberg, comedian Pregnancy: 'I m beginning to have morning sickness. I m not having a baby, I m just sick of morning.' Phyllis Diller, comedian --Northwest Herald, March, 2011

There are more than 3,000 quotes from famous ladies ranging from Coco Chanel to Frida Kahlo. There is also a back index for quick reference. First published in 2007, this version is revised and updated with witty and wise quips from women in every field of notoriety. Not only is this book a great addition to any bookshelf, but it also makes for a fantastic gift. Celebrate Women s History Month (March) by reading the words of your fellow gender. They will make you smile, make you laugh, and even make you cry. Purchase your own copy for yourself, your wife, or another loved female --mum knows everything, March, 2011

4.0 out of 5 stars Women's Wisdom and Wit 3 Mar 2011
By Rebecca of Amazon - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Action is the antidote to despair." ~ Joan Baez

"Women Know Everything" is a clever collection of female wisdom. In this book you will find quotes by pastry chefs, computer programmers, pilots, pacifists, feminists, philosophers, poets, psychologists, comedians, journalists, writers, gossip columnists athletes, educators, scientists, civil rights activists, lawyers, actors, marine biologists, singers, photographers, pastors, essayists, critics, humorists, fashion designers, producers, animal rights activists and queens.

"How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world." ~ Anne Frank

There is really something for everyone in this book. Some of the topics are a little controversial but most of the quotes are inspirational and reveal wisdom gained from experience. Some of the topics include: action, activism, advertising, ambition, anger, architecture, beauty, cats, children, chocolate, choices, coffee, cooking, creativity, death, euthanasia, depression, desire, dieting, education, equality, exercise, fame, family, flirting, food, freedom, friendship, giving, goals, gratitude, happiness, health, holidays, hope, husbands, imagination, intelligence, jealousy, kindness, kissing, knowledge, language, laughter, leadership, learning, leisure, life, lingerie, love, manners, marriage, materialism, media, men, money, motivation, opinions, parenting, peace, power, praise, pregnancy, reading, religion, security, self-acceptatnce, sex, shoes, shopping, society, solitude, strength, talent, therapy, time, travel, truth, vanity, violence, weight issues, women, work, worry, writing and youth.

"All of us are driven by a simple belief that the world as it is just won't do - that we have an obligation to fight for the world as it should be." ~ Michelle Obama

Throughout the book there are a few shocking statements. There are some very funny quotes by Phyllis Diller and a very touching quote by Drew Barrymore. There are some moments of contemplation especially on the topic of aging where the reality is that we don't honor age in our society. Did you know Madonna doesn't like dogs or that Lady Gaga has interesting views about love? Angelina Jolie also reveals some secrets of her life.

Here are just some of the famous people who have been quoted in this book: Jane Austen, Keira Knightly, Rachael Ray, Maya Angelous, Joy Browne, Laura Schlessinger, Eleanor Roosevelt, Julia Child, Nora Ephron, Tori Amos, Dorothy Parker, Oprah Winfrey, Joan Rivers, Roseanne Barr, Mother Teresa, Susan Boyle, Ellen Degeneres, Whoppi Goldberg, Shakira, Helen Keller, Julia Robers, Princess Diana, Anne Frank and Ingrid Bergman.

While most of the quotes are serious yet interesting, some are laugh out loud funny or mildly amusing. I especially enjoyed all the quotes by comedians. I think if you approach this book with an open mind there is a lot to learn. However there are some controversial topics that will require you to think about life on a deeper level. The author sometimes includes quotes that reveal both sides of an issue.

I am always hungry for new books and I can say this satisfied my appetite quite well. I think you will enjoy this book and learn something valuable in the process.

4.0 out of 5 stars Women Know Everything! 11 April 2011
By Mom on the fly - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I purchased this item as a gift & now wish I had picked one up for myself.

I have 'peeked' in it without cracking the binding, so my gift recipient will not know I had read through the authors I adore.... too many to mention, but Mother Teresa & Princess Diana & Erma Bombeck topped my check-it list.

I am sure my newly 60 yr old woman friend will truly enjoy this wonderful treasure as her birthday gift!

Maybe she'll let me borrow it. :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars small in size but big in content 31 Mar 2011
By dedicated - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I was a little surprised at the overall size of this book being smaller than I had envisioned. However; it is fairly thick and full of insightful and sometimes just plain funny quotes. It is excellent to keep at my office where every man is drawn to the title and instantly starts complaining before they open the cover. What fun. Really a very nice book and well worth buying

4.0 out of 5 stars Great quotes but usless Table of Contents 13 Mar 2012
By Georgiana - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I congratulate the author for compiling such a diverse collection of quotes by women. I bought the Kindle edition and wish I had purchased the print copy. The quotes are arranged by topic but the Table of Contents for the Kindle edition only includes the letters of the alphabet - impossible to determine the range of topics and can only guess what topics might be included. A physical copy of the book would have been easier to leaf through.

Despite this limitation, this is one of the best collections of women's quotes that I have seen. I may need to buy the print edition, too!
