Book Description

American frontier women of the 18th century were an extraordinary people whose contribution to the creation of the United States is one of the most enduring stories in history.

The gallant women of the frontier have never been given the full credit they deserve for settling with their families in an uninhabited wilderness. This book places on record the notable achievements of these heroines.

Northern Ireland author/journalist Billy Kennedy, in the eighth of his Scots-Irish Chronicles, gives recognition to the women whose lot was far from glamorous in the bleak and lonely frontier territories. They faced personal hardships and tragedies in hazardous conditions. While the men toiled arduously from dawn to dusk to lay down a stake in the New World, the women were the cornerstones of the home, the church, and the wider community.

Women had to be strong, self-reliant, resourceful, and loyal to their families. Through their honest and dedicated endeavours on the frontier, a democratic and decent civilization emerged which now extends across the great American expanse from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Indeed, the women of the American frontier deserve our honor and admiration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Women of the Frontier 12 May 2007
By Robert L. Mcmurry - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I enjoyed this book very much. After spending many hours researching my Scots-Irish ancesters and reading several books about their plight in helping to settle this country, it was very interesting to read about the parts played by the Women of the Frontier. The Socts-Irish women played a much bigger part in that settlement than most of us realize. I have now read several of Billy Kennedy's books about the Scots-Irish migration into and within this country. All of his books have been very well written and extremely enjoyable to read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Brief coverage 8 Dec. 2012
By cjwo57 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I was excited to see this book offered since one of my ancestors is the subject of one of the chapters. I had hoped for more in-depth coverage that would supplement what I already had. Still, I did enjoy what was provided.

3.0 out of 5 stars Women of the Frontier 25 Jan. 2014
By Carol and William - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is informative and interesting. It is mostly about the lives of specific women. I would have liked more information on how women actually lived and worked on the frontier. Such as how they prepared meals in a fireplace; made cloth and clothes; care of infants, cared for the family during illness, what herbs were used for different illnesses, and so forth. How they generally lived and survived in particular areas. For instance surviving in a forested area would be different than flat plains. The book was well written, just not what I was looking for.

3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat limited in its coverage 17 Jan. 2013
By Claudia10 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book was a fair read but not great. I did not find anything here that I had not read elsewhere. Somewhat limited in its coverage. Also, was somewhat limited in coverage to the Carolina's.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very basic and short stories 17 Mar. 2014
By JESSE C. McGINTY , JR - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Not really impressed since it turned out to be a collection of very short stories of a couple pages each , more suited for a juvenile reader .
