The Women is a 1939 comedy film directed by George Cukor. The film was based on Clare Boothe Luce's play of the same name One of the great successes of its day, the film starred screen goddesses Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell, Paulette Goddard, Joan Fontaine, Lucile Watson, Mary Boland, Marjorie Main, Virginia Grey, Phyllis Povah, Florence Nash, Ruth Hussey, Virginia Weidler, Butterfly McQueen, and Hedda Hopper.

The film continued the play's all-female tradition - the entire cast of more than 130 speaking roles was female. Set in the glamorous Manhattan apartments of high society evoked by Cedric Gibbons, and in Reno where they obtain their divorces, it presents an acidic commentary on the pampered lives and power struggles of various rich, bored wives and the other women that they come into contact with. Throughout the film, not a single male is seen -- although the males are much talked about, and the central theme is the women's relationships with them.

It is Hollywood entertainment at its best: great performances by the best actresses of the day, funny, sad and sarcastic. It is one of the great classic which one can watch and enjoy today. A new remake it is be released this year showing the attraction the story still holds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Catfight 6 Aug 2009
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Joan Crawford,in an early role, plays the b*tch in this film,as a man eating hussy who steals another woman's husband.Norma Shearer's character is a little too saccarine sweet but the other 'ladies'(term loosely used!)provide clever catty comments and acid observations. A comedy of NO manners.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheer Class 21 April 2009
By A. Bear
This film is a perfect example of how Hollywood used to make great films. It is a classic that will most likely outlive the rather anodyne re-make of 2008.

So many famous actresses and some great comedic moments - what a set that must have been to work on. As a big fan of Rosalind Russell I watch the film for her performance but with the likes of Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer there is never a dull moment.

The dialogue is snappy and very quotable: "You're so slim I could kill you." "You don't have to, the diet I'm on is pure poison." Buy this DVD and soak up the golden era of Hollywood without any of those pesky men getting in the way!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absence of Men 13 Jun 2007
Although men centre greatly in this movie and the effect of their thoughtless behaviour is the core of the story line for all the female characters their absence makes this an outstanding aspect of the film. After you have watched the movie you could almost convience yourself that they were active on screen. However the strong acting and dialogue of the principle women leave no room or need for their presence. This is a girl power movie circa 1939. Nothing changes - essential viewing.

3.0 out of 5 stars TW1 27 Feb 2014

This is not the film I thought it was. I remembered it as witty and pro-women but actually it is the most dreadful sentimental hogwash around. However there are some great performances and if one can avoid the dreadful message it is worth a look. No surprises but a few good vignettes.

This was a great movie and way ahead of its time. great to see such scintillating performances from some of the stars of yesteryear.
Loved the light touch of director George would have been so easy to have overplayed some of the scenes. Yes I amso grateful that I was able to loate and purchase this movie from Amazon
