Product Description

Review

"The last 20 years of scholarship have brought many forgotten women artists to attention, but too often their presentation has been marred by anachronistic feminist rhetoric. Nancy G. Heller's Lucid, evenhanded "Women Artists is a noteworthy exception."

Product Description

With coverage of the 1990s and the beginning of the new millennium, nearly half of the fourth edition of this history is devoted to the remarkable period from 1960 to the modern day when women artists emerged as the most dynamic force in contemporary art. New to this edition are innovative contemporary American artists, such as Janine Antoni and Renee Cox, as well as major international figures, including Iran's Shirin Neshat, Shahzia Sikander from Pakistan and the Icelandic sculptor and performance artist Katrin Sigurdardottir. As in past editions, all the artists' works are represented in large-format colour reproductions and the artists' careers are examined in concise critical biographies.

However, not only does it have full colour beautiful pictures (and lets face it, why else do you buy art books!), it has imformative and intellagent information about these talanted women. It is also a big book so your not looking at tiny pictures and such has the pride of being one of the best art books on my book shelf. There is one falt though, it only has on average one picture per artist and I would have liked to see more with the book twice the size. But that must be for future publications.

Very good 28 Jun 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is an excellent introduction to women artists throughtout the ages. I discovered some I had never heard of before and as a result bought other books to learn more. The only regrets I have is that it omitted some very interesting painters, like Tamara de Lempicka, and the section on contemporary artists was too heavy on US artists. Otherwise excellent with great illustrations.

Encyclopaedia of Women Artists 23 Oct 2005
By Ines Sanchez - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I wanted a encyclopaedia like of women artists and this comes close to it. It is not all inclusive but it has a good number of entries, including the well known ones and the not so well known. I wish it had had more international women artists. I like the fact that it had good color illustrations. I am glad it is included in my art library. It is a good bargain for the price. This is a reference book.

Great first art book! 9 Oct 2007
By Don't cry for me, Argentina - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is the first art book I ever read and really enjoyed it.

The book includes sort of mini-bios of each artist with descriptions of her artwork and one representative illustration. I noticed details of each artists' work that I probably would not have noticed on my own, and the book made me want to look up a number of the artists in order to see the rest of their works - and to me, this is indicative of a good book - one they leads you on to want to know more!
