After the genius of the four original Wombles albums re-released by Mike Batt's own Dramatico label, this coda to the 70's Wombling legend is not quite as essential to own in CD collections. This is the music score to 1977 movie "Wombling Free" written and directed by Lionel Jeffries. It's true all the incidental music is nicely written and orchestrated by Batt but it's not a pop album. Even the four re-recordings of previous album tracks "The Wombling Song", "Wombling White Tie And Tails", "Exercise Is Good For You (Laziness Is Not)" and "Madame Cholet" don't quite sparkle as much as on the original recordings. It's an interesting footnote which effectively ended any Wombling activity from Mike Batt until the late 90's. I purchased this to complete the collection and I am glad it's now in digital format but it certainly won't be played as often as the original pop albums. Which sort of sums up the movie itself really, which didn't manage to capture the magic of the puppet TV series somehow.
