Book Description

15 Sep 2010
The rise of the female entrepreneur over the past 30 years is a cause for celebration in the UK. Whether driven by unfair treatment at work, conflict between office and family life, or the inspiration of a great business idea, hundreds of thousands of women are motivated to work for themselves. There are many benefits to being self employed but many, too, are the challenges. Women need confidence, support, and often some start-up finance to make a go of it. This book will provide inspiration, information and loads of advice from a range of women who run their own business. It starts by recognising that women start all kinds of ventures in many different circumstances: - Developing an idea from home - Freelancing - Joining the 'mumpreneurs' - Launching a business with capital investment - Buying a franchise or creating a franchise - Becoming an direct selling agent - Creating a social enterprise - Starting up after redundancy or unemployment - Breaking new ground - young, retired, disabled, disadvantaged

When I set up my company I just did what I thought was right - for right or wrong. I did not seek any formal business advice, nor study any business books as the books I came across did not feel relevant to me as a working mum who had only ever worked for big companies and never for myself. I just bimbled along and attribute the fact that I am still here, and trading at a profit, more to luck and good judgement than because I researched what others in my situation had done before me to learn what they did to become successful. This book would have answered a lot of questions and filled gaps in my business knowledge - if only it had been around 7 years ago!

Even though I am no longer at the start-up stage I have still found myself dipping in and out of this book - the Pearls of Wisdom section and its tips from others who have trodden the same path as me is a particular favourite.

The drop-in-and-out style makes the book very accessible - as busy people it is not always possible to read a book from cover to cover in one go. This book is set out in bite-sized chunks and is very easy to read. The author does not assume anything so the book therefore suits every level of businesswomen, from the most green to the most experienced - there is something for everyone.

Well done Sandra. Any more books on the horizon?

5.0 out of 5 stars Down to earth guidance, very useful information 28 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
This is a brilliant book which I recommend to anyone who wants to start their own business as well as anyone who is already in business. The book is easy to read and you can just read the subjects which interest you the most if you wish. There is lots of useful information, down to earth guidance and the case studies add a more personal touch.
There are a lot of "business advice" books out there but this one really tops the list. Thanks Sandra for such a great book, I am sure it will help a lot of women!
