Product Description

Product Description

American feminist leader and suffragist Elizabeth Cady Stanton was also an outspoken critic of the Bible because the scriptures often portray women as inferior and have been used by men to justify unequal treatment of women in society. The 1870 revision of the Authorised English Version of the Bible prepared by an all-male committee from the Church of England so greatly dissatisfied Stanton that in response she courageously decided to compile a commentary by prominent feminists on the many Bible passages that refer to women. The result was "The Woman's Bible", a fascinating book that explores, among other things, the documentation that Jesus believed in equal rights for men and women; the ignorance, arrogance, and hypocrisy on the part of the church hierarchy; and the slaughter of women who were slaves, wives of drunkards, or were believed to be witches. The insight that Stanton and her fellow commentators provide into biblical writings and into the minds of women of her era is enlightening and serves as an inspiration to today's feminist movement. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

This book, written over 100 years ago, provides a fascinating insight into the level of rational thought existing in those days. The author(s) is/are clear in pointing out that they have little patience with the 'traditional' misogynist emphasis found in the interpretation of biblical events and they carry out an excellent demolition of these ideas.

They review the bible as any other book, pointing out its inconsistencies and immorality, while still still appearing to be devout.

Their views really do stand the test of time - relevant today as I'm sure they were then and I'm surprised the book hasn't had more publicity and I would recommend it as a thoroughly stimulating read.

Misleading Title 17 Jan 2011
By RJ
Format:Kindle Edition
I believe I am a Christian with an open mind. I have read books such as Dawkins's God Illusion as well as critiques of the Bible such as The Bible Delusion - Why Belief in the Infallible Word of God is a Delusion (Kindle Special Edition) Portable Atheist Press (GOD DELUSION AND ATHEISM / ATHEIST SERIES).

However, with these books, it is clear to the reader and the buyer what they are getting.

Unfortunately, this book is much less the case. It looked like it was a version of the Bible written for women, which is eaxctly why I got it for my young daughter. When I read it, however, I was surprised to find it to be a criticism of the Bible itself.

Once again, I am not saying that people should not feel free to criticise the Bible. However, this title is misleading. It is not THE Woman's Bible, nor is it the WOMAN's Bible, nor is it the woman's BIBLE. Instead it is "One Woman's Criticism of the Bible". If it did not rely on false advertising, it would be much better.

Stanton and her cohorts wrote The Women's Bible over 100 years ago and yet these commentaries are still as pertinent and valuable today as they were at the time they were written. She and others run rings around many of the tenets of organized religion, often disproving them with the very Scriptures on which they are founded! A great read for anyone who seeks equality for women in organized religion as well as those who wish to see a radical visionary (even by today's standards) at work in the 19th century!
