This is a stunning story following the story of Emma Harte from her humble, poor beginnings and the story leading to the founding of her empire. You really feel as though you are there every step of the way from when she leaves where her home is to finding her way and how she finds help with Blackie and her continuing strength against all odds.
This is a beautiful story and pretty much one you won't forget, this is by far Barbara Taylor Bradford's best work.

I loved this, followed by `Hold the dream.` The rags to riches thing with many unexpected twists and turns along the way. Most enjoyable.

Having heard such a lot about this 'rags to riches' story - along the lines of it being "inspirational", that its popularity meant that it had been re-printed many many times since its original publication, that women all over the world loved it etc - I wondered why I had never read it. Hearing the author interviewed on Woman's Hour on Radio 4 reminded me about it again, so I bought it. I have rarely been so disappointed. One-dimensional characters, endless descriptions of rich peoples' lives and houses(in many cases comprising little more than lists of luxury items) repetitive vocabulary, badly in need of editing....I could go on. I managed to get to the end of it, not because I cared about the characters, but really to attempt to understand its popularity. I didn't! To say I was disappointed in this book is an understatement and it reminded me that one shouldn't expect to like a book just because 'women all over the world have loved this book for 30 years...' or whatever the blurb said. Was delighted to donate it to my local charity shop!

Excellent
Thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish. Saw the film but the book is far better.Looking forward to reading the whole series, following Emma Harte and her descendants.

Really enjoyed reading this book about the start of Emma Harte empire building and her life and lives of her grandchildren - possibly the best of her books

Fantastic book but many typing errors. I would recommend this to everyone, it is just unfortunate about the errors as it spoils it and not what you expect from the kindle
