Product Description

CD Description

Everyone's favourite Go-Go is back with another solo effort, and her fans shouldn't be disappointed. Carlisle still hasthe vocal qualities that have always defined her as something special; the shaky vibrato on those long notes, the strong, husky tone, and a knack for finding catchy melodies. A WOMAN AND A MAN showcases those qualities, as well as staking out some new ground for this talented singer.
Carlisle has expanded her sound on this disc. Where she formerly adhered to somewhat predictable arrangements and production, here she uses a broader sonic pallette. "California" is a dark-tinted, mid-tempo ballad with '60s-bubble-gum background vocals. But Carlisle's forte is still big, sweeping pop songs like the title track, where she builds upon a solid pop foundation to explode into a truly inspirational, foot-stomping chorus.

About the Artist

Pop singer and ex-Go-Go Belinda Carlisle was born in the Los Angeles area in 1958. After graduating from high school in 1976 she began frequenting the L.A. club scene, where she met future bandmates Charlotte Caffey, Gina Schock, Jane Wiedlin and Kathy Valentina. Together they formed the Go-Gos in 1978, an all-female power pop band which became one of the most successful new wave acts of the early ‘80s.

By May 1985, however, the band drifted apart and Carlisle went on to a solo career, releasing Belinda on IRS Records in 1986. Thanks to the success of the Go-Gos-like hits "I Feel the Magic," "Mad About You" and "Since You’ve Gone" Carlisle became a popular solo performer, subsequently signing to MCA Records. Her major-label debut Heaven on Earth established Carlisle as a more mainstream pop singer and spawned the No. 1 single "Heaven Is a Place on Earth." The album went on to earn a Grammy nomination and sell millions of copies.

After the release of 1989’s hit Runaway Horses and 1991’s Live Your Life Be Free, Carlisle returned with 1993’s Real, released on Virgin. In 1994 Carlisle joined her former bandmates for a short-lived Go-Gos reunion, but returned to solo recording in 1997 with A Woman and a Man.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!, 1 Feb 2007

(REAL NAME)
I've always liked Belinda Carlisle since being a kid back in 1980's. I loved Heaven is a place on earth and all the late 80's stuff. However despite Belinda still recording she disappeared from my radar for a while, and I'm so happy to rediscover her again. Now that I'm approaching the end of my twenties, this album has a mature sound, warm and soothing. The songs are all very relevant to life, and true Belinda fans will love it start to finish. There are NO throw away tracks on this album, which is rare for any artist. Well done Belinda!! oxoxo

5.0 out of 5 stars Belinda Carlisle still as good as ever., 23 Nov 2000
This generally another good effort from the well known singer Belinda Carlisle.

For me, it has to be the track taken from the album title. An upbeat song with a sad story behind it. The track Love Doesn't Live Here is absolutley fantastic, as well as In Too Deep.

This album is once again class from a very classy solo singer, who nowadays in my opinion doesn't seem to get the credit she deserves.

If you're a Belinda Carlisle fan, you'll love it. If you're not, but you've enjoyed some of her other stuff, then you must give this album a go.

4.0 out of 5 stars A tearful rollercoaster of love, 29 Nov 1999
By A Customer
This album shows a sign of maturity for Belinda. With this album she seems to depart from her classic rock athems and moves into singing about painstaking events for all to here and relate to.

My favourite songs are 'In too deep' which reached no.6 in the UK charts, the catchy 'Listen to Love', the heartbreaking 'Love Doesn't Live Here' and the gorgeous 'Kneel At Your Feet'.

I would love to know who chooses the songs for release because they must have it in for her! The last few singles she has released on her last few albums (including the Real album) have shown a poor representation of Belinda's best. It is as if the worst songs were chosen to add to her unfortunate slow decline.

A brilliant album from an outstanding artist.

A vivid imagination, and a emotional heart will transorm you through a wirl wind of emotions.

Belinda can still belt it out like she used to. She still has that beautiful, clear voice. You wouldn't necessarily have to be a fan to enjoy this CD.
