If this two part mini-series deserves 5 stars, then it certainly must in large part be due to the amazing performance of Ingrid Bergman. I could hardly imagine an actress more unlikely to portray this extraordinary woman who was leader of Israel in one of the most dangerous episodes in its history. But such was the talent of this fine actress that it hard to believe that you are not looking at Golda, herself.
I cannot vouch for the accuracy of all that is related in this series - but it is endowed with an extraordinary degree of authenticity. It comes over as a sort of docudrama, but never melodrama, and deals somewhat briefly with her younger life, but then extensively with her political life - down to the last fag end (and there are plenty of those!). The supporting cast is generally adequate, although Mr. Meyerson is somewhat colourless and uninteresting. Perhaps that's how he was. Anyhow, nothing can detract from the pragmatic intensity with which Bergman masterfully interprets her character.
For anyone interested in this subject I can't imagine anyone could do it better.
