Product Description

Product Description

Proud and solitary, Eel Marsh House surveys the windswept reaches of the salt marshes beyond Nine Lives Causeway. Arthur Kipps, a junior solicitor, is summoned to attend the funeral of Mrs Alice Drablow, the house's sole inhabitant, unaware of the tragic secrets which lie hidden behind the shuttered windows. It is not until he glimpses a wasted young woman, dressed all in black, at the funeral, that a creeping sense of unease begins to take hold, a feeling deepened by the reluctance of the locals to talk of the woman in black - and her terrible purpose.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully atmospheric writing, 26 Nov 2007
By MaryAnne "dubai-reader" (Dubai United Arab Emirates) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This short story is beautifully written and atmospheric. The descriptions of the marsh and isolated island in all weathers are wonderful and the characterisations are excellent. My one criticism would be that it wasn't heartstoppingly chilling as advertised on the cover.

Arthur Kipps is a young lawyer dispatched to attend the funeral of reclusive Alice Drablow. While visiting the isolated Eel Marsh House he is to put Mrs Drablow's affairs in order and then return to London.
What appears to be a routine task turns out to be anything but; with repercussions that will affect the rest of his life.
The villagers refuse to be drawn on the subject of Eel Marsh House or the mysterious woman dressed in black whom he first sees in the churchyard at the time of the funeral. When Arthur visits the isolated house scary events become more frequent and he begins to unravel the mystery of the Woman in Black.

I enjoyed this book more for the descriptions than the story itself.
I have seen it performed on stage, where it was much more spooky and enveloping.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chilling story, 9 Feb 2009

Even though it is short, the woman in black is still very chilling, it was the ending that shook me up, the rest of the book had been very good, but the ending, which i believe is the most important part of a book, was very disturbing, shame there hasn't been a follow up!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Spooky Classic, 2 Feb 2009
By Suzanne Hendon (Dover, Kent) - See all my reviews
The Woman in Black is a classic ghost story, although quite a slim volume, every page provides a spooky, chilling atmosphere. Susan Hill is one of my favourite writers, her words are very descriptive, and her characters easily visualized. The story begins with the main character, happily settled with his family on Christmas Eve, however once the children begin to recount ghost stories, Arthur Kipps is reminded of a ghost story he has spent years trying to forget. He cannot bring himself to tell any of his family about this ghost but decides to write it all down, so begins the story of his visit as a solicitor to Crythin Gifford, to attend Alice Drablow's funeral and Eeel Marsh House.
I first saw the Woman in Black as a TV one off drama, it was very scary, and I have since seen it at the theatre 3 or 4 times. Superb! Curl up by the fire with this classic ghost story! The Woman in Black (Vintage Classics)
