More poetry than science, 12 Feb 2008
This review is from: Wolves of Water: A Study Constructed from Atomic Radiation, Morality, Epidemiology, Science, Bias, Philosophy and Death (Paperback)
Readers expecting scientific content will be disappointed. Much of the book is taken up with an indulgent autobiographical rant about the nuclear industry.
The author has developed an obscure radiobiological theory that that predicts low level radioactivity (much less than the background levels we are all exposed to) will cause an epidemic of cancers (300 times greater than current conventional risk estimates).
When the evidence to support this theory does not materialise, the author proceeds to denigrate cancer registries and public health authorities accusing them of fraud, changing figures and falsifying data. This is said to be all part of a conspiracy to cover things up. By the end of the book he has ranted against almost everyone concerned with the real information.
Is it not more likely that his theory is simply wrong? He needs help.

Change is never easy, 29 Sep 2008
This review is from: Wolves of Water: A Study Constructed from Atomic Radiation, Morality, Epidemiology, Science, Bias, Philosophy and Death (Paperback)
This book is a fascinating and mostly highly readable account of Prof. Busby's life's work to quantify and understand the damage done to human health by man made radiation in the environment. In order to do this he has had to rethink the science of radiation and biology from the ground up, and fight the existing radiation / health establishment every step of the way. That he has done so is testament to his extraordinary hard work, dedication and resilience. But what also emerges from this is Busby's remarkable qualities as a scientist. His grasp of the science is so clear and penetrating as to cut through a half century of deliberate deception, obfuscation and secrecy designed to make nuclear power and weapons acceptable. The discoveries he has made span across oncology, epidemiology, statistics, particle physics, nuclear physics and chemistry, and represent a truly remarkable achievement - all the more so as he has done all this on minimal funding and in the face of concerted and highly organised opposition. Another reviewer suggested that Busby deserves a Nobel prize for his work. I concur: never has a Nobel prize been so abundantly deserved. The only question is what for? It could be for Peace, Physics or Medicine - or best of all, all three at once.

Combat Manual for the Science Wars, 15 May 2008
This review is from: Wolves of Water: A Study Constructed from Atomic Radiation, Morality, Epidemiology, Science, Bias, Philosophy and Death (Paperback)
Chris Busby and his many friends around the world have been fighting to expose the appalling state of the science underlying radiation risk for 16 years. We have met every kind of obstacle - lies, libels, cover-ups, exclusion from conferences, intimidation - you name it, we've had it. No assassination attempts yet though, as far as we know. It's all in Wolves of Water, which I have described as "a combat manual for the Science Wars".
Everyone who gets involved in a scientific issue where fatcats are looking for easy profits at the expense of people's health or the well-being of the environment needs to read Wolves from cover to cover.
If you want more of the science of radiation biology read Busby's prequel "Wings of Death"; in Wolves he concentrates more on epidemiology and cover-up.
The one deficiency of "Wolves of Water" is that there's no index. I was so horrified about this that I put one on the internet. You can find it by googling +"Wolves of Water" + index.
