Top Customer Reviews

By Squirr-El TOP 50 REVIEWER on 10 Mar. 2015
Format: Paperback
The stories running through issues #36-42 of Wolverine and the X-Men are collected, along with Annual #1, as Wolverine & the X-Men by Jason Aaron Volume 8. This is an excellently-scripted volume, and even the cartoony art matches the mood of the stories, as the School reaches its Graduation Day ceremony. These are mainly character stories, focusing on individuals and groups, though there is a continuing sub-plot moving through most of the story involving SHIELD (though it might be Mystique working her own agenda, as she is currently disguised as dazzler, Agent of SHIELD). Wolverine finally has his showdown with Cyclops - in the middle of a secret SHIELD Sentinel base, where he manages to find storeroom full of beer; Toad has his showdown with the Hellfire Club; and Quentin Quire, in the future, as the Phoenix, has his final showdown with Wolverine on the Jean Grey School’s final day. This is a superb conclusion to an excellent series; though a new school year will begin shortly.

THE SPOILER ZONE

Annual #1 - “Gladiator Zero”, 30pp - is the story of what Kubark (Kid Gladiator) got up to after he returned home to Shi’ar space. His schooling at the Imperial Guard Academy is interrupted by the events of Infinity, when everyone but him is sent to fight the Builders’ invasion. Naturally, he runs away to fight and ends up joining the Avengers, before returning to his school…

Issue #38 - “The Day SHIELD Showed Up”
Following recent events in the other X-titles, Maria Hill and Dazzler come calling to check up on the Jean Grey School, just as two new students arrive… coincidence?

I just love this serie, it only gets better and better. If you haven't picked this one up - start with vol 1 and have a fantastic time, Wolverine as a headmaster - it can't get any crazier.

HASH(0x92202c30) out of 5 stars Aaron Finishes Strong 23 May 2014
By Carlo - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Jason Aaron's run on Wolverine & the X-Men provided readers with Wolverine's side of the Schism and the new Jean Grey School for Higher Learning. In contrast to say Uncanny X-Men the tone of the series is much more lighthearted with emphasis on humor. Not to say that there aren't serious situations or themes, but it isn't as serious as Scott's side of the Schism (at least in my opinion).

At the core of the series, I think, is showing the change in Wolverine from ruthless-killer-loner to Professor Xavier's successor. Yeah, who saw that coming? No one. And this 8th and final volume is what drives it home for me. Yes, Logan is still a very dangerous killer. Yes, Logan still prefers to punch and stab things. And yes, Logan is slated to be killed off this year after losing his healing power. But this Wolverine is clearly one who is trying to move away from the constant killing. One who cares more about the future than his own life. One who even enjoys being a teacher.

Overall, if you've been following this series, this volume is a must. It's graduation day at the J.G.S. so found out how everything ended up after 1 year of Wolverine educating the next generation of mutants.

HASH(0x92fcd5f4) out of 5 stars Graduation 18 Sept. 2014
By THowerton - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Closing out the series this collection includes issues 38-42 and Annual 1. There are three main storylines contained herein: 1) a solo Kid Gladiator story as he battles alongside the Avengers in outer space; 2) a Wolverine & Cyclops "team-up"; and 3) the main story arc wherein S.H.I.E.L.D. sends in a couple of undercover operatives to the school to gather intel. All of the stories are handled well but that third story is the most fun with one of the two agents becoming taken with the school and its unusual patrons. The series finale shows a graduating class and flashes forward to a time when an old man Logan is reminiscing about the school in its heyday just as he's closing it down. Solid art throughout with issue 42 sporting a variety of guest artists.
