I don't care if cartoons are stereotypically for kids, I own most of the 90s series on DVD and the first three Wolverine and the X-men DVDs and I'm proud!
This series is brilliant, if anything I would say it surpasses the 90s series and not only because the animation is more modern. When I first saw a DVD titled Wolverine and the X-men, I must admit I wasn't that keen as I couldn't see Wolverine in a leadership role and even though I like Wolverine as a character, he has never been my favourite X-man. I am very glad my initial skepticism was unfounded. Wolverine as a leader actually works really well, he knows what has to be done and gets it done and if any member of the team (cough, coughCYLCOPScough) isn't pulling his/her weight, let's face it, you don't want to be told off by Wolverine!
Speaking of Cyclops, he is the only thing about the series that annoys me. Even in the 90s series, he was a stuck up, arrogant boyscout who let's face it, isn't even that good! This is demonstrated by the episode where he loses his powers and it shows that he is just completely rubbish without them. All of the other characters have other skills besides their primary powers. Cyclops in this series is just as bad but now he's a moody, selfish idiot still trying to be arrogant git, his primary motivation being Jean's disappearance and no interest in anything else. He's just an irritating character! Thankfully, the saving grace is that Wolverine gets to put him in his place. Ha, take that soldier boy!
While the main cast of the team is fairly limited: Wolverine, Cyclops, Shadowcat, Emma Frost, Iceman, Rogue (kinda), Angel (kinda), Beast, Nightcrawler and Forge, there are frequent cameos from other characters to stop the formula getting stale. The main enemy in the series thus far is the Brotherhood but there are appearances from other characters like Mojo, Mr Sinister, Magneto and also out of control mutants usually being controlled by the Brotherhood.
A nice touch is the addition of Professor X who is active in the future, having been in a coma for 20 years. This allows what is essentially the X-men part 2, a completely separate team of different characters lead by Professor X in the future. So far, the main line up for this smaller team is Bishop (who is actually pretty cool after being a whiney git in the comics), Marrow and a new telekinetic character. Other familiar faces appear such as Polaris.
All in all, a brilliant series and with more adult storylines than the 90s cartoons. If you're a fan of the X-men, child or adult, I would recommend you give this series a go!
