Good horror books really do not run in pack - for every one that is good there is ten that suck. Now this one is a real masterpiece. It is extremely well written, logic, coherent, almost scientifically credible, with an exceptionally great insight in the minds of the monsters - in fact, are they really monsters? The great originality of this book is that the "monsters" are actually a loving and caring family - well, OK, they mostly dine on human flesh, but nobody is perfect, right? This is a pure treasure - one of the best fantastic books I ever read! It will scare you but also make you howl with delight - not only at the full moon... And if you saw the movie, do not panic - the book has almost NOTHING to do with the movie (in the film they changed everything and messed it up as a result) and is infinitely better.

Strieber's race of Wolfen scares me.
We know very little about which species walked the earth, our knowledge based on the finds paleontologists have made. Do these finds not only give us knowledge about what was once there, but also set standards for what couldn't have existed?
Strieber writes about a race, with a metabolism and a hunger so strong that they never leave any remains. The dead will be devoured, to the smallest piece of fur, the last claw, leaving nothing for the scientists to find: ergo = they don't exist!
But here they do, as shadows in the night, cunningly avoiding being seen and devouring anyone who by chance catch a glimpse of their nocturnal frenzies.
The book is simply exciting. read it, but don't blame me if the Dark gets much worse hereafter.

I read this 12 years ago and have been searching for another copy ever since.Horror stories are not normally my thing being of a gentle persuasion, however I found The Wolfen oddly plausible and quite one of the most disturbing books I have read. Often afterwards, at night walking home, I would stop and wonder....was that something rushing across the street, almost impossibly quickly. I guess I found that this book induced fear, pure and simple. The film based on the book was lamentable and pointless. The beauty of the book is that it tells the story from both sides, human and Wolfen and the film could not capture that element. Quite how it was believable I don't know, but it was. Read it yourself, but afterwards, don't go out walking after dark...
