Wolf Star follows the continuing adventures of the USS Merrimack and her crew following the events at the Myriad, which make it a sort of sequel / prequel / alternative history.

Many things are the same, but not everything. Augustus is sadly missing throughout most of the book and poor Lt Colonel Steele is carrying a torch for Kerry but not doing anything about it. There are also no gorgons (at first) and Rome and the US are at war, but gradually this changes.

But the fundamentals of the world and the crew of the Merrimack are the same and just as engaging as before.

It's a much tougher ride for Captain Farragut in this book. He's faced with some pretty difficult moments and it's interesting to see how he copes.

Some of the more minor characters from The Myriad get a chance to shine. Commander Calli Carmel is to the fore for much of the start of the book and has some fantastic scenes of hijacking and a rather sticky legal problem.

It's really interesting to see the crew as they meet the gorgons for the first time and follow them as they begin to understand the scale of the threat and what they can do about it.

There are lots of great bits in there, but in particular I loved the idea of Colonel Steele arming his marines with plant fronds on the Gladiator.

It's a great book which is clever and interesting enough, and has such fantastic characters, that it's a pleasure to read a variation on the basic set up of The Myriad.

I'm really looking forward to the next part.

This book feels as if the author decided that the in-cluing in _The Myriad_ wasn't enough, and so she wanted the characters from that book to turn up in the events which occurred in the back-story of that book. Yes, there was a time-travel episode in _The Myriad_, but the result here is a mess; much of the sense of menace goes away because the characters are so much the authors' darlings that they cannot but be indestructible, the glorification of force that is a common failing in MilSF is here with a vengeance. I finished the book, returned it for a refund, and will buy no more.

Wolf Star Review 4 Feb 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am reading the four books in the 'Merrimack' set consecutively. The stories are merging together in my mind. This is a lively series. It is not pure science fiction with reasoned science extrapolation. Then again, it is not simple fantasy. Excellent stories, good characters and an interesting theme running through the books. I'm very pleased to have read them and happily recommend them to others.
