5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Book If... 13 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
If you want to start making a MMO using the Realm Crafter game engine this is the perfect book for you.
The book is 50% in general about MMO and things to think about when making a MMO. The other 50% is intro manual to Realm Crafter and the basic use of this.
If you are a hardcore MMO-gamer and has a high level off computer skill this book will most likeky not teach you much. (I am both and still enjoyed reading it).
If you are not a hardcore MMO-gamer and computerfreak and want to give a try at making a MMO, then this a good book to read before you get to far along.

2.0 out of 5 stars An Expensive User Manual 6 Mar 2012
By Drillfoot - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm a big fan of this author, his other books on game engines or tools are outstanding. This one however fails to meet the criteria of his other books.

This book was a big dissapointment. It is just as the other user said. It's a basic manual for the Realm Crafter Professional edition, and has about 3 tutorials. These include, but are not limited too how to add media to your project, and how to make terrain using a heightmap.

This book is something the developers should have released with Realm Crafter Pro. So instead this acts well as a user manual that should be given to the user upon purchase of Realm Crafter.

I will say if you just picked up Realm Crafter Pro, and would like a detailed explanation of the tools and tabs included in Realm Crafter, this book MIGHT be for you. However most users will already understand the tabs and basic engine functions 'out of the box'.

What this book should of done was show you how to drop a character onto the terrain, set up a basic quest, and maybe kill a few monsters and turn the quest in. That would of made this book at least half way worth the purchase price.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not impressed 9 Aug 2011
By Spammuel - Published on Amazon.com

I bought this book to learn about MMORPG programing. Unfortunately, the book is mostly a user manual for the RealmCrafter software. The book goes into great detail describing what every item on every menu does. It also functions as a basic tutorial on how to use the software. There is a bit of additional data, like an out of date list of current MMORPGs and some resource websites, but this data hardly makes up for the uselessness of the rest of the book.

This book is best suited for a complete novice who wants to learn how to use the RealCrafter software.

The most entertaining part for me was the first chapter, where it has a history of MMORPG games, most of which I have played at some point in my gaming career.

I give the book two stars because it does have some useful tidbits of information hiding in it.

1.0 out of 5 stars As Previously Stated - A User's Manual 10 May 2012
By Scogiejko - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is NOT a book I would recommend.

While I didn't walk away from this book with nothing. I was majorly disappointed to find it was nothing more than basically a user's manual. After I purchased the program this book uses as reference, 'Realm Crafter Pro'. I found it to be a very buggy program and quickly learned that the information in the book was already outdated, with only a few of the topics covered in this book actually working in the program. Overall I felt that the book would have been more informative if it had used a better MMORPG engine as an example. I did however enjoy the authors knowledge and experience of what is needed to create an MMORPG. He gave some useful techniques for planning an MMORPG and there where some nice tips as to how to move forward with such a project.
