Hard to put down!!! 25 Dec 2011

Simply worded, well written, and I really liked the characters. Not many books get the right combination of fast and fun, but this does. For the price, a steal and very much recommended. Hope to see more from this young author. He's got a bright future if he keeps writing at this level. I was completely captivated. A couple awkward scenes but otherwise so much better than most.
Fantastic debut! 27 May 2012

Format:Paperback
Wizards, warlocks, law gnomes, golems, trolls, magic, high-tech gizmos, and adventure all wrapped up into one intricate tale of enchantment that leaves the reader breathless and wishing for more--this is Arianna Kelt and the Wizards of Skyhall, by JR King.

Right away I was pulled in by the professional and artistic cover, the giant floating city looming in the background, three young wizards casting powerful spells, and when I opened the book, I was not in the least disappointed.

Once you pick this book up, you can't put it down. Immmediately you are swept off into the vast wizarding universe and into the life of a young fourteen year old girl, Arianna Kelt. Her path takes you to new and fascinating places filled with magic and mystical creatures.

I loved the sharp wit and sarcasm. I loved the humor and action. I finished this book in two, gulping down 100+ pages at a time. I am sure I would have finished in a day if it hadn't been for work.

I give huge kudos to King for writing and publishing this book at age 14. When most people his age are caught up in video games, cliques, and the opposite sex, he has shown the fortitude, talent and incredible patience required to complete a novel. This is a huge accomplishment.

I would absolutely encourage spending the money to buy this book. You will be pleasingly surprised by King's new, fresh style, as well as his deep understanding for the realm of fantasy and apparent love for writing.

But be warned, this story is addicting.

Not Worth It 21 Jan 2012

I got the book when it was being offered for free, but I wasn't able to finish it, which is rare for me. Arianna was not likable enough to hold my attention, and although the concept of gnomes being "Law Gnomes" instead of "Lawn Gnomes" was interesting, it seemed copied from the Artemis Fowl series and the LEPrecons. The story starts with the orphaned thief Arianna who is drugged by the headmaster at her orphanage to reveal her secret stash of stolen money. So she decides to rob a bank. Arianna is able to perform unrealistic maneuvers as she attempts to do so, and no clear motivation is shown for why she feels the need to rob the bank right then. She even speculates that she needs the money for later anyway and will only hide it until then, so why doesn't she wait until she needs it and rob it then? She proves very unlucky however, as a bumbling thief also happens to be robbing the bank the same night. She then races away across the rooftops (although it would be less inconspicuous to use roads), but spots an oddly dressed man who turns out to be a wizard, so "Law Gnomes" arrive to take her to Xjog. The "Law Gnomes" seem awfully quick to take her into custody for spotting a "wizard", and yet they are also rather friendly to her at the same time. There is no return for her, however, because as she's seen a wizard she must either join them or remain with them forever. Why do they care this much about one girl having seen a man in funny clothing? And why isn't he getting punished for being careless? And that's when I stopped reading.

The concept itself has potential, but the characters need work, as do the action descriptions, which are too long and unrealistic. I haven't read enough of the book to comment on the plot but from what I saw of it, events happen a little too quickly and without reason. My advice: don't buy it! But if you've read the sample and liked it, you've read more than I did, and probably have a good idea about whether it's worth your money.
