excellent read, 18 April 2006
This review is from: Wizards Conclave: Age of Mortals (Mass Market Paperback)
This novel is a return after many years to the fold of the Dragonlance Chronicles. And how I missed them!
This book takes you to the time after the Gods have returned to Krynn, as does the magic. The users of wild magic are shunned by the old skool mages and the Wizards conclave (which had been disbanded due to lack of magic).
The heroine of this book is a very young Icewall inhabitant and as you read on you will find her struggling to coep with the wild magic she has been using and the deeper, older magic she has secretly learnt by reading granny's books!
Dalamar the Dark and Jenna, Mistress of the Red Robes make a welcome return as do several other characters.
Just when you think you know where the story is going, it twists and turns, making you want to turn each page quickly to know the outcome of the situations the main characters find themselves in.
On the whole an excellent read, highly recommended book by an old favourite of mine!
Enjoy! - I did!

This review is from: Wizards Conclave: Age of Mortals (Mass Market Paperback)
This book covers the re-establishment of the Orders of Magic after the War of the Souls, and the reclaiming of the Tower of Wayreth.
What's good about it? Well, it brings back two favourite Dragonlance characters, Dalamar and Jenna, and introduces a major new character, Corynn. The plot is relatively fast-moving. Its earliest chapters are set in Icewall, an interesting bit of Krynn which is rarely written about. Perhaps the best-written chapters are the ones in which the mages on Krynn, having lain low for decades, are summoned back to Wayreth to fight for the Three Orders. Another good point was Samuval putting in an appearance as the leader of a group of bandits.
Downers? It's got some gaping continuity errors. Oddly, Dalamar looks much more youthful than in the War of the Souls Trilogy, and his hair colour has mysteriously changed - maybe he decided to experiment with bleach after being banished from the Tower in Palanthas, who knows? There's also a green dragon that puts in an appearance at a point convenient for the plot but at odds with the rest of the Dragonlance universe. Corynn's ability to memorise spells permanently was also a bit baffling, and kind of flew in the face of all the previously established magic rules.
So, some of the continuity gaps are a bit annoying for hardcore fans, but perhaps more annoying is the rather two-dimensional, boring bad guys. I ended up skipping the bits that they were in, as they were so dull.
On the plus side, the book redevelopes the original Orders of Magic, and introduces a whole load of potentially interesting new plot developments. On the downside, it's far from the best Dragonlance books, even amongst Douglas Niles spin-off novels.
Recommended for those particularly into the magic storylines, or for completists. But definitely not one for newcomers, or even Dragonlance readers who are more into different aspects of the Dragonlance universe.

Very Good, 11 May 2007
This review is from: Wizards Conclave: Age of Mortals (Mass Market Paperback)
I quite enjoyed this book, I havent been reading a lot of Drgaonlance books recently, although in my past I was an absolute Dragonlance junkie, reading everything I could get my hands on that had Dragonlance on it.
It starts a little slow, but the author builds the central character and you begin to like her more and more. For me its great to meet Jenna and Dalamar again and a brief visit to Palanthas was a great surprise. Altogether a great read, not one for Dragonlance newbies, but definitely one for those that have read all the major books first. Its not got much depth to it but it was enjoyable!
