Product Description

In the darkly phantasmagorical world of the carnival magician and sideshow hypnotist, the gruesome "illusions" of Montag the Magnificent are unique in that they seem to become retroactive reality long after the the tricks are done. Is it coincidence, or circumstantial evidence of the world's most diabolically ingenious murders?

wizard of gore 7 Feb 2011
Format:DVD
Who'd have thought that someone would bother to remake this silly Herschell Gordon Lewis gore-fest. Fewer still would expect it to actually be a good film. Kasten takes the original's basic premise of a magician who creates the illusion of killing people on stage, only for them to die later in eerily similar ways, but makes of it a decent plot, and adds extra seediness. Crispin Glover is Magnificent as Montag, and is particularly lunatic in the bull-oven scene. Admittedly, it lapses into near incoherence towards the end, but it's not a big problem when the film is crazy in the first place. The extras are great as well.

Wizard of Boredom 23 Jan 2011
Format:DVD
The problem with the original Wizard of Gore was the repetitive storyline and that the gore scenes were all pretty similar. A modern remake with a good rewrite could have improved much on the original, both in terms of the gore scenes and in terms of narrative. Unfortunately, these filmmakers did just about everything wrong. One, the story: Yes, the story could have been much improved. But screenwriter Zach Chassler has added way too much that doesn't improve the story but only makes it feel contrived and incoherent. Next, the style of the movie. The original was lightweight entertainment, not to be taken seriously. This one, on the other hand takes itself very seriously. The director seems to have tried to make some neo-noir, complete with silly voice over narration. I get the impression the films is supposed to be stylish and goodlooking, but it only feels pretentious and certainly not well made. It made me think of Battlefield Earth, which also had lots of weird camera angles for no apparent reason.

This movie has a bad, contrived, completely uninteresting story. It's certainly not a scary horror film. It's not an interesting mystery. And it's definitely not the well made and stylish film the filmmakers seem to have attempted to make. I got nothing out of watching this, except that I got bored. Not recommended to anyone.

Lots of stunning visuals and amazing camera tricks in this remake of Hershell Gordon Lewis' original of the same title. We follow investigative reporter Ed Bigelow (Kip Pardue) who has received a ticket inviting him to a magic show performed by Montag the Magnificent (Crispin Glover). Montag's show consists of him brutally mutilating selected audience members on stage, but just when the crowd is about to leave in fear induced disgust the lights are turned on to reveal no act of violence has actually occured. A day or so later the female participants turn up murdered in exactly the same fashion that they appeared to be slain on stage previously. Is Montag really a diabolically ingenious murderer or is someone out to frame him? Is he really a magician or is he just the trick? The more Ed Bigelow (Pardue) investigates the more his life spirals out of control.

Crispin Glover (Bartleby) and Kip Pardue put in "cracking" performances and get supported well by the talents of Brad Doriff (Trauma) who plays Dr. Chong and '80's horror legend Jeffrey Combs (Re-animator) who is cast as The Geek. The directing by Jeremy Kasten, who's previous venture into the realms of surreal was Horror In The Attic also starring Combs, is very impressive with smart camera angles being employed to enhance the acting and surrounding atmosphere, with low grade special effects being smartly used to create the hallucinatory feel generated by the hypnagogic fuelled storyline. Those who hail the Puffa-fish... beware!

Viewing is highly recommended for fans of Combs and Glover; trippy narratives that challenge the cerebrum; old school horror with modern techniques guaranteed to satisfy any certified gorewhores looking for some cheap titilation. The 5 stars are fully deserved for a budget movie that begs multi-viewing for clarity.
